Ben Waber, Ph.D., is the President and co-founder of Humanyze. He is a visiting scientist at the MIT Media Lab, previously worked as a senior researcher at Harvard Business School, and received his Ph.D. from MIT for his work with Alex “Sandy” Pentland’s Human Dynamics group. Waber’s work has been featured in major media outlets such as Wired, The Economist, and NPR. He has consulted for industry leaders such as LG, McKinsey & Company, and Gartner on technology trends, social networks, and organizational design. His book, People Analytics, was published by the Financial Times Press in 2013.

As the Great Resignation continues unabated—current estimates are that 4.4 million Americans left their jobs in September—there’s growing concern that younger professionals’ embrace of hustle culture is primarily responsible for the high levels of burnout they’re experiencing. Wearing 80-hour work weeks like badges of honor and staying chained to their virtual desks even during their downtime has resulted in increased stress levels, mistakes, and plain old exhaustion. Personalized employee perks? Aren’t those just for executives? CEO Amy Spurling says the answer is a resounding, “Hell, no!”

Amy Spurling, founder and CEO of the HR tech company Compt, thinks perks should be a lot less exclusive.
