  • Steph Prangley - The Sober Rebellion

In today's episode we talk with Steph Prangley. Steph is a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and Recovery Coach living with her husband, 3 dogs, and too many houseplants in Greenville, SC. She runs The Sober Rebellion, a virtual private practice helping clients use nutrition and functional wellness practices to enhance recovery efforts, repair their body from the damage done with long-term alcohol use, and address underlying conditions that often overlap with chronic alcohol use.

More than a nutrition practice, The Sober Rebellion is about helping people feel their best in the holistic sense, so they can let go of external expectations in a world telling them “you’re not enough” and “you come last”. Clients learn to live a fulfilling life with passion, purpose, and permission to rest, fueled by restoring physical and emotional health and getting in alignment with values.

Steph’s story is deeply rooted in a history of high-achieving perfectionism and self-sabotage cycle. In her 20s and 30s, she escaped feelings of low self-worth by overworking and disordered eating. In her late-30s, she began healing her relationship with work, food, and her body, but developed a disordered relationship with alcohol instead.

Steph has found freedom from alcohol, work addiction, and disordered eating by addressing her chronic health conditions and feelings of low self-worth. She loves serving her community and is passionate about using her training, experience, and education to serve people healing their relationship with alcohol.

  • Ep 12: Reframer Question - How Do I Resist the Urge for a Post-Work Drink?

In today’s episode we're going to do something slightly different and that is to answer a question sent by one of our Reframe users.  This question is related to ideas on resisting the urge for the post-work drink as well as dealing with the temptation to stock up on alcohol when you're at the grocery store.  I wanted to share some ideas and tools we can use to get through these situations.  I am going to broaden it a little bit as well and just answer the general question of ways to get through a craving, whether after work, on a day off, or just any time we may have an urge to grab a drink when we don’t want to.

    Some Tools We Discuss:

    • H.A.L.T. (3:00)
    • T.I.P.P. (4:30)
    • Playing the Tape Forward (8:20)
    • Urge Surfing (9:50)

This week's journal prompt (13:30) - Write down all the ideas you had while listening today that you want to try out.  Also, write down any tools you use now.  Which one’s work best, and why? Keep this list handy and add to it as you continue to work on yourself.

  • Challenging Normal

In this episode we look at challenging what's "normal" when it comes to alcohol in our life and work to push back on society's norms and expectations surrounding it on our alcohol-free or cutback journey.

This week's journal prompt - Write down your thoughts on this once you listen to the episode. What do I want my normal to look like? Take away any excuses, reservations, etc. and just ask yourself "What do I want my normal to look like?" What's optimal for you? What's ideal? Frame it however you want, but think about it. Journal on it.

  • Heidi Blair - Live More, Drink Less

In today’s episode we talk with Heidi Blair.  Heidi is a Certified Professional Co-Active coach who has also furthered her training with an extensive mentorship program led by Marion Franklin, Master Certified Coach, and author of “The Heart of Laser Focused Coaching” where she learned to readily identify the client’s underlying root cause of established behaviors, patterns and habits. She started her own Reframe journey in 2021 on the Cut Back Track and through using the app, attending meetings and working with a coach, she created a successful cut back approach which she now employs as a coaching modality for those who want to change their relationship with alcohol, whether they are wanting to cut back, go alcohol free, or have yet to determine which track is right for them.

As a moderator here at Reframe she leads many meetings each week, where she offers a heart based, compassionate approach to coach participants who may be stuck, struggling or simply in need of being seen, and have reflected back to them who they truly are.

In this episode we talk about:

    • Heidi's cutback path
    • Tips for a successful cutback journey
    • The importance of support

  • Working on Systems and Goals

In this episode we focus on how we can look at goals differently and focus more on building systems in our lives that can be the foundation of our success.  We talk about using SMARTer, short-term goals to help us better improve our systems and make lasting change while tempering any unrealistic expectations and comparisons we may have.

This week's homework - Write down your own SMART goal (make it Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Based) in one area of your life for something you want to achieve.  Then take a look at and journal about what it will take to build a system (i.e., daily habits and routines) and shift your identity to someone who can achieve this goal.  Then pick one of these routines and start implementing it this week consistently and build from there.

  • Jessica Dueñas - Bottomless to Sober

In today’s episode we talk with Jessica Dueñas from Bottomless to Sober.com.  Jessica shares her story of addiction, recovery, and using her voice to help people find their way out of pain. Jessica’s disordered behaviors started with binge eating in her bedroom to cope with the pressures of being an Afro-Latina girl growing up in New York City. By the time she got to college, her addiction had morphed into alcohol use disorder. Years later, she was awarded Teacher of the Year in Kentucky but was still drinking a fifth of bourbon a day – a secret she had to hide from her peers, friends, and students.

Ultimately, she found recovery and has been sober since November 2020 and her recovery starts in Twelve Steps spaces and eventually branches out to other self-development work.

Jessica has shared her story on platforms such as NPR, Red Table Talk, and most recently, CBS to help break the stigma of addiction and mental health treatment. Through her platform, she shares other stories of people’s recovery, continues to break the stigma of addiction, and coaches individuals who also need private support in their healing journeys. She’s also the host of Reframe’s Book Club meetings and the community meeting for those in their 30’s and 40’s on Monday nights in the app!

In this episode we talk about:

    • Wanting vs. Willing
    • Taking away other people’s power over me by recovering out loud
    • Where to start cutting back or cutting out

  • The Habit Loop

In this episode we take a look at the habit loop as discussed in books like The Power of Habit (Charles Duhigg) and Atomic Habits (James Clear) and identify where and how this shows up in our life related to alcohol and how we can work to change our automatic responses that have built up over time.

This week's homework - Start your own habit log in your phone or on paper and identify when a craving for alcohol (or anything else for that matter) might show up and what was the cue that started this thought. Then look at what reward your body/mind is searching for in that moment and 5 ways you can achieve it without alcohol. Repeat this process for at least the next week to become aware of how these thoughts show up and build up new tools to help you on your journey.
