Dr. Healy discusses Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction (PSSD), caused by the discontinuation of SSRIs. He has been trying to get the media and FDA/EMA and other regulatory agencies to recognize and list PSSD as a known side effect, but has been met with staunch resistance, despite thousands upon thousands of patients reporting this problem. Throughout his 30 year journey of trying to illuminate the frequency and severity of this, he has been met with several responses, including that it isn't happening, then later recognition of PSSD but claims that it is caused by the patient's depression. (I don't know of any psychiatric disorder that causes your genitals to be numb...) He also talks about visual snow syndrome associated with SSRIs, and the risk of worsening addictions.
We then pivot to talk about his history of working on the original research on the serotonin reuptake system and the debunked serotonin theory of depression, which 'came from the marketing department of SmithKlineBeecham' and was deemed untrue by the creator of the SSRIs, Arvid Karlsen, before their FDA approval and popularization in the late 1980s and 1990s. It is crazy to me that these companies are able to get away with this and ostracize and demonize clinicians trying to sound the alarm and protect their patients, but this is the healthcare world we live in, and we're going to have to demand change for change to occur.

This segment is about suicide and homicide as known side effects of SSRIs (and some other psychiatric drugs). I start out by outlining a recent local mass shooting and compare it to a 1989 Louisville shooting involving Joseph Wesbecker in which the Wesbecker family later agreed to settle with Eli Lilly and intentionally present a weak case (unbeknownst to the judge and not publicly reported for several years after the fact). Dr. Healy talks about this case and several others he has served giving expert testimony on. Together, we reveal that suicide and homicide are known side effects of these drugs, and the pharmaceutical companies that made them became aware of this in the SSRI clinical trials in the 1980's and 1990's.
For practitioners in our position, we're told and taught that this newest class of antidepressants is safer and JUST as effective as older classes, and this is a bold-faced lie. We'll talk more about their efficacy in future segments, but when you have an anti-depressant that MIGHT cause you to kill yourself OR your family, is a small and very modest benefit really worth the risk? This is not to say there aren't uses for SSRIs, but their current use - as a panacea for all types of depression - is dangerous for Americans' health and well-being. This information is NOT widely distributed to the general public because it would eat into profit margins... and there are many practitioners who aren't even aware of the degree of this problem either, so SPREAD THE WORD and help us restore healthcare decisions back to being between patients and their providers.

For the first time, I am combining my intro monologue/rant with my guest introduction of Dr. David Healy. In our series, our primary topic is the dark side of SSRIs, with segments emphasizing the true side effect profile of SSRIs, which include suicide/homicide, and sexual dysfunction - oftentimes lasting long after patients stop taking the antidepressant, the industry and FDA's negative impact on clinical practice, the impacts of medicating our kids - a new phenomenon in the last 30 or so years, and how our reliance on medications and polypharmacy is actually reducing our life expectancy.
Dr. Healy is a name known around the world for his decades-long journey of calling the pharmaceutical industry out for their manipulative tactics that heavily contribute to a malfunctioning healthcare system, and an especially poor mental healthcare system in the United States. You can learn more about his views and his platform on Rxisk.org OR pick up one of his many books which include Pharmageddon and Let Them Eat Prozac among others OR do a simple google search of his name (he's the psychiatrist, not the footballer) and you will find numerous interviews, blog posts, and more.

Here, Jaime talks more about the RAGE system, which may provide further explanation and depth to our discussion. This one's quite a bit more scientific fyi.

We give our closing thoughts on the neuron doctrine and how it has impacted scientific research over the last century +, and finish out with an awesome song, "Texas Thornbush" by local Louisville artist, Jack Rabbit and the Dirty Hares.

In this segment, Jaime and I reveal some of the more common-sense reasons why glial cells are more important to our brain function than historically given credit for, and also review some research over the last 60 years on glial cells, further highlighting their impact on brain function and psychiatric and neurologic disorders.

This is fascinating segment where Jaime and I discuss ways in which glial cell dysfunction likely provides a better explanation for some common NeuroDevelopmental (Autism, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder) and NeuroDegenerative (Alzheimer's Dementia, Parkinson's Disease, ALS or Lou Gehrig's Disease, Epilepsy, Traumatic Brain Injury) conditions.

Jaime and I try to break down the problems that human's level of consciousness brings, as well as discuss the Root of our Thoughts, and how simple neuron-to-neuron communication fails to provide an adequate explanation for how us humans perceive ourselves, others and the world around us.
