Finding Freedom from Fixed Destinations: How Joel Found Relief from Expectations on His Bench Journey
Joel Elston recently returned from a trip to Anna Maria Island, Florida, the location of his famous “bench” where he made pivotal life decisions in the past. However, this trip brought him an unexpected realization – that the physical bench was no longer the source of comfort and guidance he once thought it to be.
While sitting on the bench on the anniversary of his original visit, Joel began to question why he felt disappointed by the changes to the island over the years. Through self-reflection, he came to understand that it was his own fixed expectations of returning to the island that were causing dissatisfaction, not anything inherently wrong with the place itself.
Joel shared with friend Walt Thiessen how the island now felt overcrowded and expensive, no longer matching his memories. But Walt helped Joel gain perspective by asking, “What role do you play in this?” Through honestly examining his own mindset, Joel was able to see that it was time to let go of the idea that the island represented a destination or source of rejuvenation.
This realization brought Joel a sense of relief. As he told Walt, “I don’t have to go there. And it’s not a driven place anymore.” Joel now understands that the “bench” exists as a metaphor, following him wherever his journey leads rather than being confined to one location. Wherever he finds comfort and solace is his bench.
Walt affirmed Joel’s new perspective, recognizing that in truth, each person’s journey is their own “bench.” Their discussion highlights how fixed expectations can cause dissatisfaction and how learning to appreciate life’s unfolding journey, rather than destinations, leads to greater fulfillment. By letting go of attachments to the past, Joel found freedom from expectations and a renewed ability to embrace each new moment.
