Appointed Chair of Sociology at Otago University in 2010, Professor Campbell was also the Director of the Centre for the Study of Agriculture, Food and Environment at Otago for the decade prior.

In 2020 he published a book titled 'Farming Inside Invisible Worlds: Modernist Agriculture and it's Consequences'.
