In this episode of the Rob Talks Podcast, we are covering the topic of:
Understanding status. Usually when we think of status, we think about world leaders or the hierarchy that you have at work. But in fact, status is within every interaction, connection, and relationship that we form. Status is so much more than just the title of your job.
It takes just one-tenth of a second for people to judge someone and make a first impression.
Within that analysis we have just made within that first impression is an element of working out another person's status.
If you think somebody is higher than you in whatever perception you have of their status then you are more likely to respect what that person says, potentially be afraid of them, also feel as though you can't relate to them.
If you think somebody is of lower status than you then you are most likely going to think they are not intelligent, that you are superior because of x y and z that you have learnt in your 50 years of experience, and that they are most likely wrong in whatever they are saying.
These scenarios happen every day in a multitude of different contexts, between a multitude of different people, and it happens sometimes subconsciously and consciously. So, understand that status can play a quite vital role especially subconsciously when you are interacting and connecting with others.
To stop status from becoming a bias in your life the best things you can do is:
No matter what status you think you may have or that even maybe attached to your ego or self-confidence (which can be toxic) remember that we are all really truly the same.
We are all human and so consequently we should treat others with greater humanity. If we do that then we can build great, deep, and meaningful connections, and we can live happy and fulfilled lives.
