S8 Ep12: Life in the Peloton – Jimmy Whelan

Listen Later

Welcome to The Cycling Podcast presents Life in the Peloton, with Mitch Docker.

The Cycling Podcast is delighted to welcome Mitch Docker and his excellent Life in the Peloton series to the fold for 2020. This is the first episode of a fortnightly series presented by the EF Education First rider Mitch Docker.

Let’s hand over to Mitch to find out more…

“Life in the Peloton started in 2016 and if you are a regular listener you’ll know the drill by now, but if you’ve just discovered the podcast let me fill you in on how it works.

“Every fortnight, I sit down for a chat with someone from the world of professional cycling to discuss what life is like inside the sport. From teammates to rivals, to some people who may not be as well known, but who have a fascinating story to tell, I’ll introduce you to some of the people I’ve rubbed shoulders with in the bunch and met on my travels as part of a World Tour team.

“In this episode, meet my EF Education First teammate Jimmy Whelan, or ‘Half-Whelan’ as we nicknamed him after last year’s pre-season training camp because of his eagerness to get stuck in having just turned pro.

“I was keen to catch up with Jimmy on the eve of his second season in the World Tour to find out what he learned from his debut year. I hope you agree it’s a really interesting listen.

“By joining up with The Cycling Podcast I’m hoping to develop some of the ideas I’ve got for the future of the podcast. If you’re a long-time listener to the podcast it’s great you’ve joined me for another season of podcasts.  If you’re listening for the first time, welcome along, I hope you enjoy the ride.

“Cheers, Mitch.”

Theme music
The theme music for Life in the Peloton was composed by Pete Shelley, who was lead singer of the punk band Buzzcocks. It was commissioned by the production company behind Channel 4’s coverage of the Tour de France in the 1980s and was used as the theme music for the nightly highlights show. Pete died in December 2018. We were given permission by Pete’s widow and his manager to continue using the music for the theme tune to Life in the Peloton. To hear more about the music, listen to the Andre Greipel episode of Life in the Peloton.
