In the confined space of an airplane, the simple act of reclining your seat can spark a debate. Is it a right, a privilege, or a breach of etiquette? In a recent conversation, Tara and guest, former flight attendant, Josh Mojica delve into this topic, sharing their perspectives on the unwritten rules of seat reclining.
The Debate: Tara raises a common concern about the abruptness of reclining without warning, suggesting it feels inconsiderate. She advocates for a gentle approach, signaling the intention to recline as a courtesy to those seated behind.
Josh, on the other hand, argues that the design of the seat itself implies permission. He points out from his experience, that after the initial service period, passengers should feel free to recline, as the seats are meant to provide comfort. “It’s designed to be back,” he asserts, emphasizing the importance of personal comfort during long flights.
The conversation highlights a broader question of personal space and shared environments. While opinions may vary, the key takeaway is the importance of mutual respect and understanding. Whether you choose to recline or not, being mindful of fellow passengers can make the journey more pleasant for everyone.

Traveling often brings unexpected adventures, but some stories stand out more than others. In a gripping tale shared by guest, Josh Mojica, a seemingly ordinary stay at a hostel in Panama turned into a night of unexpected danger and intrigue.
Josh recounts his stay at what he initially thought was a regular cheap, hostel, only to discover it had a hidden side. The night took a dramatic turn when he stumbled upon a room filled with cocaine and men engaged in illicit activities. The situation escalated quickly, with one of the men confronting Josh with a knife, fearing for his life.
Just as the tension peaked, the unexpected intervention of the hostel owner, an elderly lady, diffused the situation. Her silent command ensured that the incident would remain unspoken, leaving Josh to return to his room, unable to sleep after the harrowing experience.
This serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of travel and the importance of staying vigilant. While most journeys are filled with positive experiences, it’s the unexpected moments that often leave the most lasting impressions.

In today’s fast-paced digital age, capturing and maintaining attention has become a formidable challenge. Dr. Jeanine Turner and Tara discuss the concept of “competitive presence,” exploring strategies to engage audiences amidst countless distractions.
Dr. Turner reflects on the timeless principles of Aristotle—logos, pathos, and ethos—emphasizing their relevance in modern communication. However, she notes that unlike the past, today’s audiences have numerous distractions at their fingertips, making it essential to compete for their attention actively.
Tara in turn shares anecdotes from their time researching for Dr. Turners book of creative tactics used to capture attention, such as a professor climbing onto a desk to engage students. These stories highlight the need for innovative approaches to ensure that messages resonate and captivate audiences in a world filled with competing stimuli.

The concept of “budgeted presence” is exploring how we navigate our own needs while interacting with others needs.
Dr. Jeanine Turner from Georgetown University explains that budgeted presence involves focusing on one’s own needs without being overly concerned about others’ actions. This approach often leads to managing multiple conversations simultaneously, highlighting the challenge of maintaining genuine connections in a digital landscape.
Then there is “entitled presence,” which is the attempt to control social interactions by minimizing distractions. “You’re trying to control their attention by controlling the technology,” she notes, emphasizing the delicate balance between personal needs and social etiquette.
These insights shed light on the complexities of social interactions in a digital age. As we navigate our presence and interactions, it’s crucial to find a balance that respects both personal needs and the value of genuine connections.
