A report this week ranked Australia's passport as the equal-seventh most powerful in the world, based on the number of countries it grants access to.

It comes as demand for Australian citizenship reaches never-before-seen levels, with the Federal Government revealing in August close to 189,000 people were waiting for their citizenship applications to be processed.

The report takes a look at the status of the Australian passport and others around the world.

Mr Riza Colpan has lived in Australia for nearly fifty years, having arrived from Turkey in early 1970 under a 1967 agreement between Australia and Turkey. He is among the first Kurds from Northern Kurdistan (Turkey) to settle in the country. Mental-health professionals employed by Medecins Sans Frontieres ((MSF)) say children as young as nine years old have been attempting suicide on Nauru.

MSF, also known as Doctors Without Borders, had been providing mental-health support services on the island until the Nauruan government gave its staff 24 hours' notice to leave last week, (fri, oct 6).

With its representatives now back in Australia, the organisation is calling for an end to Australia's indefinite offshore detention.

In Australia, Kurdish migrants first arrived in the second half of the 1960s and early 1970s mainly from Turkey. In the late 1970s families from Syria and Lebanon were also present in Australia.Since the second half of the 1980s, the majority of Kurds arriving in Australia have been from Iraq and Iran; many of them were accepted under the Humanitarian Programme. However, since 2015 due to the war in Syria and Iraq and ISIS’s occupation of many areas in those two countries, a number of Kurds and Yazidis have arrived in Australia as refugees.

Mr Riza Colpan has been in Australia for almost fifty years. He arrived in Australia from Turkey in early 1970 following a 1967 agreement between Australia and Turkey. Mr Colpan is one of the first Kurds from Northern Kurdistan (Turkey) who arrived in Australia. We spoke to him about his thoughts and commitments to the Kurdish community in Sydney from mid 1970s to the 1990s.

This year's Nobel Peace Prize has been jointly awarded to a Congolese doctor and a Yazidi human rights activist.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee says it has awarded Nadia Murad and Denis Mukwege the prize for their efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war.

The announcement has been widely welcomed by many, who say the pair have both worked hard to help women and to give them a voice.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered the United States to ensure sanctions against Iran do not impact humanitarian aid nor civil-aviation safety.

The ruling is a victory for Iran, which has argued sanctions imposed since May violate the terms of a 1955 Treaty of Amity between the two nations.
