In September 2012, 29-year-old Irish woman Jill Meagher was living and working in Melbourne, Australia. After spending an evening with colleagues in the suburb of Brunswick, she began the short walk home.

She never made it.

Jill’s disappearance sparked a huge search and captured the attention of people across Australia and Ireland. But as investigators pieced together her final movements, CCTV footage would lead them towards a man with a disturbing history, and raise serious questions about how he had been free to walk the streets at all.

For this week's episode, Bethan is away, so I'm joined by Mark Randell from the Naturewatch Foundation, a former senior police detective who has spent years investigating animal abuse and campaigning to improve animal welfare around the world.

Together, we examine one of the most disturbing criminal cases we've ever covered.

Adam Britton was internationally respected as a crocodile expert and wildlife conservationist. Behind that carefully cultivated public image, however, investigators uncovered a catalogue of horrific offending that shocked even experienced detectives.

In this episode, we explore how Britton managed to conceal his crimes for so long, what the investigation revealed, the psychology and behavioural warning signs discussed during the case, and the wider relationship between animal cruelty and other forms of serious offending.

With Mark Randell's unique experience investigating these offences, we also discuss why animal abuse should never be dismissed as a lesser crime, and how cases like this can inform safeguarding and criminal justice.

In August 2000, the quiet Cornish village of Carnkie became the scene of one of Britain's most devastating family murder cases. Over the course of just 24 hours, Lee Ford murdered his wife, Lesley, and her four children before attempting to hide what he had done and convince neighbours they had simply disappeared.
