If you're like me, instilling a new habit is a struggle, and often, after much effort, the new habit did not stick. For the longest time, I've tried to build the habit of meditating, journaling, and affirmations without success. I would start with much enthusiasm, fail, and after a while, I would try again, usually at the start of the new year.

Then I read about habit stacking. It teaches you to stack new habits (ex: meditation) on top of what you already do today (ex: making coffee). Studies show that habit stacking works because the habit you want to build is placed right after what you already do today, so what you already do today acts as the cue to start the new habit. Some examples:

  • After pouring a cup of coffee each morning, I will meditate for five minutes.
  • After returning home from work, I will change into my workout clothes and head to the gym.
  • After getting into bed at night, I will name three things I am grateful for.
  • However, after giving habit stacking a try using pen, paper, a large wall calendar, and a timer, I found the process of manually attempting habit stacking cumbersome, which made me less likely to do it.

In this episode, I will dive more into habit stacking, how to leverage it to build new habits and the ingenious solution I found that made habit stacking a reality for me.
