  • Season Four Trailer - 'Black Images Matter' Launching 11 Jan 2021

Shade returns for a new season, reflecting on the images and stories that emerged from the 2020 BLM uprisings.

Join Lou, along with the trailblazers and change-makers from the worlds of magazine & book publishing, photography, art, journalism and activism, to consider the effect of the summer 2020 uprisings on our visual and social cultures.

Music has been composed for Shade this season by musician Brian Jackson (of Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson). The duo composed the politically resonant 70's hit 'The Revolution will not be televised.'

Released weekly every Monday from 11 Jan 2021

  • S3 FINALE & CARNIVAL SPECIAL with Fiona Compton

In conversation with CARNIVAL QUEEN Fiona Compton, on the roots & evolution of Carnival!

Fiona is a Notting Hill Carnival Ambassador and founder of @knowyourcaribbean which teaches the history and culture of the Caribbean. Fiona’s work explores the disparities in representation of the Afro Caribbean diaspora within art and mainstream media.

We talked about Carnivals roots and traditions as acts of rebellion, dating back to the 17th century. How the enslaved started the tradition in response to the Lent masquerade Balls held by French & British enslavers. Carnival is more than sound systems, its a form of protest. We talked about how the 'battling' used by the reggae and calypso artists influenced the British music scene, and the meanings behind the key costume and procession traditions. We also talk about this years virtual carnival weekend 29th-31st August.

  • S3 E8 SYLVIA ARTHUR Founder of The Library of Africa & The African Diaspora (LOATAD)

I first met Sylvia 3 or 4 years ago as a guest of a play she had written and performed, called Obama and Me - more about that in the show.

    Of her library, Sylvia says

“Now more than ever, spaces that centre Black narratives are necessary, but we’ll continue to elevate African literature long after the current news cycle moves on.”

I loved talking with Sylvia so much, we covered her move to Ghana from Europe, how she feels about those book lists that have been circulating following the murder of George Floyd and what use, if any are they in affecting actual change. Sylvia tells us why LOATAD is so needed right now and how Akala came for an unexpected visit recently.

Please remember to subscribe, share and review the show, it helps make the work more visible for others who have yet to discover it - you can do it now while you’re listening in! Thank you!

And if you benefit from this work, please consider supporting it by becoming a Shade Patreon, from as little as £1 per month. Thank you!
