However, with the legalization of same-sex marriage nationwide starting in 2012, the use of "partner" for heterosexual couples becomes questionable. Words matter. On top of all the above, saying "partner" has an implication that there is equality in your heterosexual relationship. That is not biologically accurate, nor is it accurate when looking at it from an evolutionary psychology perspective. Women operate in the SMP with hypergamy, and by it's very nature, demands that she try to select a mate who she perceives as above her in some way. There is no equality in the SMP. Get over it.
