Jill had money, Jill was engaged to be married to Sir Derek Underhill. Suddenly Jill becomes penniless, and she is no longer engaged. With a smile, in which there is just a tinge of recklessness, she refuses to be beaten and turns to face the world. Instead she went to New York and became a member of the chorus of "The Rose of America," and Mr. Wodehouse is enabled to lift the curtain of the musical comedy world. There is laughter and drama in _Jill the Reckless_, and the action never flags from the moment that Freddie Rooke confesses that he has had a hectic night, down to the point where Wally says briefly "Let 'em," which is page 313. The heroine here, Jill Mariner, is a young woman from the lower end of the upper class. We follow her through financial disaster, a broken engagement, an awkward stay with some grasping relatives, employment as a chorus girl, and of course, the finding of true love. Other characters include wealthy Drone Freddie Rooke and writer Wally Mason, her childhood friends; her financially inept uncle Major Christopher Selby; her fiancée at the beginning of the book, the M.P Derek Underhill, and his domineering mother, Lady Underhill; Jill's unpleasant relatives, Elmer and Julia Mariner; more Drones Club members, various chorus girls, composers and other theatrical types, and, of course, miscellaneous servants. When Mary Lennox, who has been brought up in India in a spoiled manner, is orphaned she has to move to Yorkshire, England, to live with her uncle in Misselthwaite Manor. In the Republic of Corvain, anybody who has a hint of magical power is rounded up and thrown into prison.  They're doing it to defend the new nation, says the revolutionary government – defend it from the sorcerers and sorceresses who used to be the lackeys of the man-eating Auks in the bad old days of the monarcy.  When Grizelda, a young seamstress from the poorer part of the capitol city, suddenly finds herself the government's target, she fears she is done for.

But in prison she meets a group of rat-riding pixies and earns their undying friendship by mending their clothes.  In exchange, they help her to escape and seek refuge in the world below the city.  Living underground means Grizelda has to adapt to the strange customs of the goblins, a cheerless bunch who storm around muttering about the dictatorship of the proletariat.  

Not content to remain in exile, Grizelda winds up entangled with a group of human revolutionaries.  Together they hatch a daring plan to return the Republic to its original ideals, before it decayed into a police state.  If their plan is going to work, Grizelda will have to get Communist goblins, irresponsible pixies, and revolutionaries still deeply mistrustful of magic to work together.

This is a lesser-known work, often overlooked. These Spiritual Maxims were manuscripts found amongst the aforementioned Letters and also written by Brother Lawrence himself. The Maxims are different from the letters — the careful arrangement adopted suggests matured thought and the inference is not unreasonable that he intended them to sum up his teachings. The reader apologises for the unworthiness of his delivery… the English itself was difficult enough to read and the ancient punctuation had more commas than full stops. My sometimes stilted delivery is caused by me being partially-sighted and having to read everything in short sections. (Introduction by the reader)

Hola gente, soy Pedro Julio y les invito a iniciar conmigo la aventura que representa ponerse a leer. Esto es pónganse a leer, un espacio de divulgación de la lectura en el que compartiremos autores, ensayos, cuentos, novelas, poemas, todos los géneros literarios, aquí nos encontraremos para hablar de libros y de lo sabroso que la pasamos cuando leemos y lo que sufrimos cuando se nos acaba la lectura. Pónganse a leer nace como concepto gracias a una frase de mi abuela (mi persona favorita en el mundo) resulta que cuando visitábamos su casa en vacaciones, mis primos y yo nos recreábamos deforestando el patio de la casa, ella muy circunspecta nos miraba desde lo alto (es una gigante vasca de 1,75) y nos decía con su dulce voz… pónganse a leer. Aquella frase se convirtió en un mantra. Gracias a ella descubrí autores fantásticos y obras que marcaron mi vida, pero eso lo compartiremos en el camino que nos espera. Yo tengo que admitir que soy una rara avis, me ha gustado la lectura desde niño, no solo por la influencia de mis abuelos maternos que eran grandes lectores, sino también porque crecí literalmente en una biblioteca, la Armando Zuloaga Blanco de Cumaná, mi mamá era la supervisora de las salas infantiles de la Red de Bibliotecas Públicas del Estado Sucre, y al ser hijo único de madre soltera no tenía más opciones que pasar mucho rato en su trabajo y que bendición jajaja, en esa biblioteca pasé los momentos más felices de mi niñez. Pero entiendo que no todos han tenido la fortuna de acercarse a la lectura por los mimos medios que yo, así que como dice el maestro Luis Beltrán (Prieto Figueroa) en “la magia de los libros”, aquí intentaremos descubrir juntos cuales son nuestros libros, lo que nos gusta y desde ahí vivir con emoción el viaje por el mar de las historias, como Harúm (Harúm y el mar de las historias de Salman Rushdie). Desde este espacio haremos apología de la lectura, ese vicio que nos une y nos consume… ya lo saben entonces… pónganse a leer.
