Regarded as the one of the earliest examples of feminist philosophy, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman is written as a direct response to Charles Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, a French politician who delivered a report to the French National Assembly suggesting that women should only receive domestic education and additionally encourages women to stay clear of political affairs.  In her treatise, Wollstonecraft avidly criticizes this inadequate perception of women as an inferior sex and attacks social inequality, while also arguing for women’s rights in the hope of redefining their position both in society and in marriage. Exploring themes of oppression, feminism, social reforms, education, sensibility, reason, and marriage, Wollstonecraft successfully sets the foundation for liberal feminism which had later inspired many to express their support.

Published in 1792, the piece begins with Wollstonecraft’s argument that the power of reason is what places humans above all other forms of natural life, and this position is further reinforced by virtue and morality, and finally secured with the accumulation of knowledge. So, she believes that the key to happiness lies in the degree of reason, virtue, and knowledge exercised within society. Furthermore, this allows Wollstonecraft to express the notion that women are not naturally inferior to men, but instead this invalid perception is a direct outcome triggered by society’s failure to employ reason and properly educate women.  Subsequently, she illustrates the ways in which women’s position in society is obstructed from early on in life, as they are encouraged to care for superficial attributes, surrender themselves to sensibility, and tend to their husband’s every need. Consequently, they are prevented from developing the ability to become autonomous members of society. In addition she expresses her belief that women should be equal in marriage and viewed as companions through life, rather than serve the sole purpose of pleasing their husbands and serving as decorative ornaments in society.

Needless to say, A Vindication of the Rights of Woman is an influential and highly valuable piece in the history of feminist theory and activism, as it vividly portrays the political and social scene of the 18th century and marks the first step to the emancipation of women.

Una lunga staffetta Dalla Resistenza ai giorni nostri: come nacquero a Reggio Emilia gli asili più belli del mondo.   Nel 1991 Reggio Emilia viene indicata da Newsweek, uno dei più importanti magazine americani, la città più innovativa del mondo in merito alle scuole per l’infanzia. In un lungo dossier sulle 10 scuole migliori del mondo, a fianco di interi stati ritenuti eccellenti per alcune specifiche discipline - la Nuova Zelanda per la lettura, i Paesi Bassi per matematica e lingue straniere, il Giappone nelle scienze - il territorio di Reggio Emilia diventa il modello educativo a cui guardare. Ma come è stato possibile, per una piccola provincia italiana, arrivare ad ottenere un riconoscimento così prestigioso, che ha poi portato questo approccio educativo a essere studiato in tutto il mondo? Come spesso accade le grandi innovazione non nascono da un episodio o da un luogo isolato ma da un intero contesto particolarmente fertile e sensibile, nato attraverso il superamento di ostacoli che ne accelerano lo sviluppo, da prove ed errori che stimolano la creatività di un’intera comunità. Nel 1991 Reggio Emilia viene indicata da Newsweek, uno dei più importanti magazine americani, la città più innovativa del mondo in merito alle scuole per l’infanzia. In un lungo dossier sulle 10 scuole migliori del mondo, a fianco di interi stati ritenuti eccellenti per alcune specifiche discipline - la Nuova Zelanda per la lettura, i Paesi Bassi per matematica e lingue straniere, il Giappone nelle scienze - il territorio di Reggio Emilia diventa il modello educativo a cui guardare. Ma come è stato possibile, per una piccola provincia italiana, arrivare ad ottenere un riconoscimento così prestigioso, che ha poi portato questo approccio educativo a essere studiato in tutto il mondo? Le 11 septembre 1973, un coup d’État militaire met fin brutalement à l’expérience chilienne d’un socialisme démocratique. Plutôt que de se rendre au général putschiste Augusto Pinochet, le président Salvador Allende s’est suicidé avec un fusil automatique AK47 qui lui avait été offert par Fidel Castro. Plus de 3000 opposants seront assassinés ou portés disparus au cours des 17 ans de dictature. Des centaines de milliers de Chiliens et de Chiliennes ont été jetés sur les routes de l’exil.

Je m’appelle Sandro Calderon Arenas.

Ce 11 septembre 1973, je l’ai vécu au Chili. Je ne m’en souviens pas. J’avais à peine deux ans. Mais ces événements ont bouleversé ma vie. Mes parents ont pris le chemin de l’exil. Nous avons atterri à Zaventem en 1979.

Avec ce podcast, je vais tenter de vous raconter un demi-siècle d’Histoire. Mon histoire, celle de ma famille, mais surtout celle des Chiliens et des Chiliennes qui ont trouvé refuge en Belgique. Ils m’ont raconté comment ils ont vécu cette histoire tragique : l’arrivée au pouvoir du socialiste Salvador Allende en 1970, le coup d’État et la répression à partir de 1973, le départ en exil, la vie en exil en Belgique et le Chili d’aujourd’hui.

J’ai rencontré également des Belges qui sont venus en aide aux réfugiés chiliens.
