It’s the countdown to the 100th anniversary of the Armistice of 11 November 1918, where the world finally saw the end of its very first World War. This seven-part podcast series unravels the woes and the politics in what is often described as the “war to end all wars”, leading to an Allied Powers victory and the formation of new nations across Europe and the Middle East. We walk through the final weeks of the war with military historian Glyn Harper [Link 1] and RadioLIVE host Graeme Hill. “Jesus, make it stop: The death throes of WWI” [Link 2] originally aired on RadioLIVE’s Weekend Variety Wireless show [LINK 3}, with a new episode coming out every Sunday from 9:30pm. Harper is a professor of War Studies [Link 4] at Massey University in Palmerston North. He is also Massey’s team leader for the Centenary History of New Zealand and the First World War project (writing one of the first volumes). A former teacher, he joined the Australian Army in 1988 and after eight years transferred to the NZ Army, where he rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel. Harper was the army's official historian for the deployment to East Timor and is the author of fourteen books for adults, including In the Face of the Enemy: The complete history of the Victoria Cross and New Zealand; Dark Journey and Images of War: World War One: A Photographic Record of New Zealanders at War 1914-1918. Harper also enjoys writing books for children. Some of his children’s books include The Donkey Man, My Grandfather’s War, with his latest (Gladys goes to War) released in March 2016.

In 1972, Harlan J Strauss, a young American PhD student, came to Ireland and interviewed veterans of the Irish independence struggle - men and women, at this point in their 70s and 80s, who shared their experiences, sometimes for the first time. These audio recordings sat in Harlan's attic in Washington, DC for decades, unpublished and unheard. In 2022, Harlan brought them to Dublin and deposited them at the National Folklore Collection at UCD. This podcast explores the things those people said and how those who lived through the Irish revolution saw it fifty years after the fact. Harlan’s tapes offer often unparalleled insights into both the experiences and perceptions of revolutionaries reflecting back on their youth. Now, 50 years later, Conor and Harlan have teamed up to delve into these interviews and get an insight into the mind of an Irish revolutionary.

20th Century Revolutions is a weekly podcast that traces some of the most consequential revolutions, political and social, that took place across the globe during the 20th Century.Currently On: "Season 2: The Young Turks - Revolutions of the Ottoman Collapse, pt. 2"As a podcast about revolutions, the narrative will naturally pick up where the great Mike Duncan left off in his wonderful Revolutions podcast. This show is similarly broken up into seasons each covering different revolutions with episodes that are around 25-40 minutes long.As a podcast about the 20th century, I will try to make some sense of the 20th century and how the dramatic events of these 100 years shaped our world today. One of my hopes is that the framework of political and social revolutions will allow for new understandings of the 20th century. If you have any suggestions for future seasons, notice any serious blunders I have made in my facts or pronunciation, or just want to say hi, please email me at twentiethcenturyrevolutions@gmail.com.Helpful maps and images: 20thcenturyrevolutions.comSupport the Show: https://www.patreon.com/c/mattpayne

Since Britain's National Health Service was established in 1948 tens of thousands of Irish women and men left Ireland and went to train as nurses in the UK health service. Recruitment drives throughout the 1950s & 60s saw NHS staff travel around Ireland to interview and sign up mainly Irish teenage girls for nurse training. The Irish Nurses in the NHS Podcast series shares the experiences and lives of nurses who travelled from Ireland and helped build Britain's national health service over these decades up to the present day. In this series you'll hear from many of these Irish nurses; their motivations to leave home: how they adapted to their new lives in Britain and what their training entailed. The podcast series includes many funny memories as well as some heartbreaking stories. It will look at questions of was it like to leave Ireland in your teens (literally) and arrive in a new and unfamiliar country - and that was in a time when there was no internet, mobile phones or computers! How were they welcomed and what was life like in Britain? This podcast series aims to answer these questions and brings to life the untold stories of Irish nurses in the NHS. The Irish Nurses in the NHS podcast series and the broader Irish Nurses in the NHS Project would not have been possible without the generous contribution of the Irish nurses themselves who trusted us with their stories to whom we are indebted .
