All young Tommie Jo Swanson ever wanted to be was a racecar driver. A native of Commonwealth, a sleepy little town in Southwest Virginia, she always dreamed of running bad-fast cars on the NASCAR circuit. But every racing dreamer has to start somewhere. For her sixteenth birthday, her father purchased a late model stock from local racer, Jerry Slater, who had fallen on hard times. The goal was to one day race the car at the mysteriously found lost speedway of Groovy Hollow Raceway.

The infamous bullring of a short track, Groovy Hollow, inexplicably disappeared in the mid-1990s during a lightning storm. Also disappearing that night was the track champion and leader of that final race, the infamous legend of Groovy Hollow, Bucky Blackwell. But now the track has been rediscovered, deep in the twisting woods of Commonwealth, Virginia. Bucky has returned, too, with his dangerously fast (and reckless) Halloween Machine, and he is dead-set on reclaiming his throne.

Over the course of four years, Tommie finds herself entangled in a terrifying mystery surrounding Groovy Hollow and its infamous Halloween Machine. This novel is about the bond between daughter and father over the sport of auto racing and the various corruptions of the industry, some venturing into the realm of the supernatural.

倪匡，著名小说家。原名倪亦明，后改名倪聪。原籍浙江镇海，1935年出生于上海，1957年到香港。作过工人、校对、编辑，自学成才，成为专业作家。他写作面十分广阔，众体皆备，小说则包括侦探、科幻、神怪、武侠、言情各种。写作速度也十分惊人，每小时可写四五千字，曾同时为12家报纸写连载。武侠小说以《六指琴魔》为代表， 想象奇特；也曾在金庸出国期间代金庸写《天龙八部》连载（这一部分后来金庸改写时删去了）。 【生平】 一九五一年，倪匡初中毕业后以十六岁半之龄进入华东人民革命大学受训三个月，自华东人民革命大学“毕业”后，继而参加中国人民解放军和公安干警，并先后参与“土地改革”、“治理淮河工程”后至苏北、内蒙古垦荒，足迹并远至东北大兴安岭。在内蒙时因“破坏交通”（严冬冰封河道时，将一条小木桥拆下来充作木柴）被打成“反革命”，遭隔离软禁数个月。 一九五七年，倪匡由内蒙古逃亡至广州，七月间偷渡澳门再逃进香港。从此义无反顾，再也没有回过神州大陆。初至香港时曾在夜校读书，因而认识了倪夫人，李果珍女士。倪匡最初在染厂里做杂工，并开始投稿《真报》，后被《真报》录用，先后任工友、校对、助理编辑、记者与政论专栏作家（笔名为衣其）。 一九五七年底，倪匡第一篇有关“土改”的小说《活埋》在香港工商日报发表。第一篇发表的散文是《石缝中》。第一本小说是《呼伦池的微波》（创作于五十年代末，背景为蒙古草原）。 一九五八年，倪匡开始写武侠小说，笔名为岳川。 一九五九年，倪匡与李果珍女士结婚，现有一女（倪穗）、一子（倪震）。后大部份时间乃是自修，算得上没有正式接受过学校教育。 一九六二年，倪匡于查良镛（金庸）的鼓励下，开始用笔名“卫斯理”写小说。第一篇小说名为《钻石花》，在《明报》副刊连载。至第四篇小说《蓝血人》起，卫斯理系列小说正式走向科幻系列。（《蓝血人》一书于二零零零年入选“二十世纪中文小说一百强”，成为倪匡科幻小说的代表著作）。 六十年代末，武侠影片大行其道之际，倪匡转而从事剧本创作。十多年间，所写剧本不下数百部，代表作有张彻导演的《独臂刀》。 一九七二年，卫斯理系列小说《新年》发表后，倪匡暂停卫斯理系列小说的创作，时间长达六年。 一九七八年，卫斯理系列小说《头发》发表，被评为最受香港青年欢迎的小说。倪匡此后又回到了科幻小说的创作道路上。 一九八六年复活节，倪匡在台北一家教堂中受洗（不过仍然肯定上帝就是外星人）。原因是与牧师祷告后，治好了多年以来的酒瘾。近年来他笃信基督，频频在香港及台湾作见证。 一九八七年，倪匡与梁小中（石人）、哈公、黄维梁、胡菊人、张文达等发起成立香港作家协会，并出任会长。 一九九二年秋，卫斯理系列小说《运气》发表后，倪匡移居美国三藩市新唐人埠，居所甚似一个多士炉。闲时在家里种花养鱼，如蔓陀萝及神仙鱼等。他笑称洗手间可以看到金门桥，所以作了一句诗：“举头看金门，低头看‘小鸟’”。移民后的倪匡生活优哉悠哉，自称厨艺第一、园艺第二、文艺仅是第三。 【人物个性】 倪匡人生阅历丰富，什么苦难都尝过。他为人风趣幽默。古怪兴趣多，古怪想法更多。（曾经有一次，在一只小小的跳蚤身上感悟到自称为万物之灵的人类，生命力原来如此脆弱，对于恶劣环境的适应性和忍耐力，还不及一只构造简单的跳蚤。）所以他写文章手疾眼快，千变万化。倪匡自认是个很胡闹的人，但对于工作他是很严谨的。他规定自己每天要写八千多字，这样他便可以工作一个月，然后休息一个月。他又规定自己在黄昏前尽量把工作做好，因为一入黑，他的手便蠢蠢欲动，想摸酒杯了。他写各种类型的小说，如科幻，侦探，武侠以及爱情文艺小说，他又写电影剧本，乃至抒写个人感受的杂文和散文。自一九七五年来港后，他笔下出现了不少科幻，侦探及武侠小说，电影剧本不下几百部，而且在本港各报刊上他每天都发表专栏文字。 倪匡是个怪人，做事往往出人意表，他不懂驾驶，但迷上研究汽车时，曾经独个儿把一部汽车化整为零后再装嵌回原状。他至少有两次遇鬼经验，坚信灵魂的存在与不灭。早年时还经历过“狐仙显圣”，因此，至今仍然认为不同的生物在通过所谓的修练，是可以让身体产生结构上的变化，就会成人成仙。（卫斯理科幻系列《成精变人》，就是一只神鹰经过种种的变化，最后变成人的故事！） 倪匡的个性极端情绪化，难得不糊涂。率性放任，热情爽朗，慷慨侠情。绝对的自由主义，不喜欢受约束，不爱争胜负，不喜欢正经八百，绝不会道貌岸然。 【科幻传说】 传闻说倪匡曾在东北省看见过外星人，所以他的科幻小说才这么出色，而他自己说本身是喜欢写武侠小说，但有金庸这位老友金玉在前，只好舍难取易，专心从事科幻小说。（写科幻小说容易？）在所有作品中他最喜欢的人物是卫斯理，最喜欢的作品是卫斯理系列《寻梦》，其次是卫斯理系列《黄金故事》。最喜欢的武侠作品是《火并》。 【最多产、多样化的作家】 倪匡是最多产、多样化的作家，他自称“自有人类以来，汉字写得最多的人”。（其实这是倪匡自谦，这句话中的“汉”字大可删去。古今中外，倪匡唯一可能的对手，只有西方科幻大师艾西莫夫。然而艾大师的英文多是由打字机或文字处理机打出来的，所以这句话绝无人能找到反证。）倪匡也是最有职业道德的专业作家，他从不拖稿、欠稿（早期写得太快，写完后还故意搁几天再交稿）。但稿费、版税奇高，并有两大原则：请先付钱；货出不改（小说绝对不准人改，剧本如何改则绝不过问）。 自一九五七年由内地来港后，写了三十年，一个星期写足七天，每天写数万字。最令人称奇的，是他可以写三十年而灵感不断，题材不尽，且是畅销的保证。江湖中人更戏称他为“袋装书大帝”。出版界流传一个笑话：即使倪匡写的是无字天书，也会迅速售清。极其量下次购买倪匡作品时，看清楚是不是无字天书续集罢了！在香港，纯以写稿而致“富”的作家甚少，倪匡是其中之一。 【小说种类】 倪匡的作品包括小说（武侠、推理、科幻、奇幻、奇情、色情）、散文、杂文、专栏、政论、电影剧本。（请参考倪匡著作目录）从没有写过的文体只有歌词与广告词。 倪匡的小说气氛逼人、情节诡异、构思奇巧。小说的数量已超过三百本。电影剧本已超过四百部，保证是世界记录。 【最推崇的小说家】 倪匡最推崇的小说家分别是金庸、古龙、琼瑶、亦舒、高阳、夏树静子、爱伦坡；最推崇的散文家是柏杨与李敖。 【刻图章高手】 倪匡是业余刻图章高手，当年就是靠伪造图章与路条，才能一路从内蒙古逃到香港。伪刻图章的原料是肥皂，并没有依照任何样本，只知道刻得愈大就愈唬人。他还是业余海洋贝壳分类专家，曾购上千本参考书，并租下一个居住单位，陈列所收藏的各种贝壳。又曾花上几年时间收集及钻研贝壳，虽然最后意兴阑珊把心爱的收藏卖掉，但他对贝壳的认识已达专家境界。【倪匡的好友】倪匡有几位至交好友，古龙，两人于一九六七年结识，旋结为莫逆之交。古龙过世，倪匡伤心欲绝，吊祭时泪洒灵堂（还把古龙陪葬的洋酒喝了一大半）。结果古龙的遗体竟然当场吐血！倪匡不顾他人的警告，将故人之血郑而重之珍藏起来。 金庸，倪匡多年的好友与老板。 【倪匡的亲人】 倪匡的妹妹即著名小说家亦舒，本名倪亦舒。他笑说出版社每次找他都是为了取得亦舒的出版权，他的反而无人问津。他的儿子倪震，也是出版界的人，出版《yes》杂志，更游说倪匡写少年卫斯理！
