千年以上もの間、サラン・レ・バンは製塩と、塩の供給で繁栄していた。
今日、塩の博物館と大製塩所では、フランシュ・コンテ地方ならではの製塩について学ぶことが出来ます。

まず、最初に巨大な地下ギャラリーを訪ねます。現在もなお機能している梃子システムは、2つのボーリング技術の立坑(たてこう)をつなぎ、200メートル以上の深さまでのかん水を汲み取ることが出来ます。
次に、かま焚きシステムを使い、かん水を蒸発させて塩を精製する塩釜スペースを見学します。そして、見学は児童向け説明スペースへと続きます。
また、こちらの塩の博物館では、より深く千年の製塩の歴史に触れられる様、当時のフランシュ・コンテの塩の精製についての映像もご覧頂けます。

最後に、大製塩所と塩の博物館-サラン・レ・バンと姉妹関係にあるアル-ケ-スナンの王立製塩所は、18世紀に造られた長さ21キロメートルの« ソモデュック »と呼ばれる木製水路で、かん水を直接運ぶ為につながれていました。
2009年6月27日、2つの製塩所は共にユネスコの世界遺産のリストに加わりました。
