“It's time to make a deal.” Announces incoming President of the US,
Donald Trump. If he does not end Russia’s war against Ukraine war soon,
Trump implies that Putin will face punitive tariffs and sanctions, on
top of those already imposed. Trump also says he’ll ask NATO allies to
raise defence spending to 5 percent of GDP, which is far beyond the
current spend, and even higher than current US expenditure on defence.
This would be a transformational change to many societies, with
implications that I think he can hardly grasp.

Trump did not attend the World Economic Forum in Davos in person, but
via a video link announced he would bring down the cost of oil, because
"if the price came down, the Russia-Ukraine war would end immediately.
It's time to end it." He added. This comes a day after he threatened
massive tariffs and sanctions on Russian exports if Putin fails to make a
deal to end the conflict. Not after 24 hours, but within the first 100
days of Trump taking office.
For perhaps the first time, Trump blamed Vladimir Putin for the fact the
war has not ended. Up until now he has not directly spoken in negative
terms about the Russian president, sparking a belief against some of his
detractors that he may be a Russian asset. But does Trump now see an
opportunity in weakening of even beating Putin?

The Lychakiv military cemetery opened in Lviv at the beginning of the
Russian invasion of Ukraine already contains hundreds of graves, with a
capacity ten times greater. Tragically, it's area has grown considerably
since I was last there in August 2023.

Everyone will have their own reasons to feel anxiety. For me, it’s
because I have relatives who ended up in a place like this, also
extermination camps located in Poland. And since 2012, I’ve been
tracking the rising authoritarian tendencies in Russia, with a feeling
of dread about where this would end up. History does not repeat exactly,
and it can be dangerous to assume patterns that happened then are
exactly thew same as patterns now, but the number of historical
parallels between the 1930s and today are too numerous to ignore.
This is a warning from history. There will always be bad people, intent
on malice and mischief, self-enrichment to the detriment of the
majority. But it’s when good people turn a blind eye, and fail to
organise to counter the bad, that evil people and their evil acts
triumph.

U.S. intelligence warned the White House that Russia was planning to
smuggle incendiary devices onto cargo planes heading to the US. This
sounds very similar to the devices apparently planted on DHL delivery
places, that are alleged to have caused two warehouse fires. According
to The New York Times report The White House, warned the Kremlin to stop
the operation. Tusk did not provide details to underpin the allegation,
but it was felt serious enough to put his reputation on the line by
stating it emphatically, in public, and in the full glare of the world’s
press, given that he was with Zelenskyy at the time. "All I can say,
and I will not go into details, but I can confirm the validity of these
fears," said Tusk.

Oleksandr Mykhed is a Ukrainian writer. Until March 2022, he lived in
Kyiv; he is now enlisted in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. He is the
author of nine books; selected essays and excerpts from his books have
been translated into ten languages. He has participated in literary
residencies in Finland, Latvia, Iceland, the USA and France, and a
virtual residency at Oxford University. He has written for publications

August 2023 was a huge success, and had a great impact. Now our aim is

Sergej Sumlenny is founder of the European Resilience Initiative Centre
and a former Regional Director for Ukraine and Belarus at the Heinrich
Böll Foundation. He is based in Berlin, Germany and is an expert in
Energy and Security Policy, Human Rights, and International Business
Consulting. He is also an expert in the Central and Eastern Europe
region, with a Ph.D. in Political Sciences. Fluent or native in German,

Cormac Smith has worked in Public Relations and Corporate Communications
for over three decades. In 2016 he travelled to Ukraine to take up a
special appointment as the ‘Strategic Communication Advisor’ to Pavlo
Klimkin, then the Foreign Minister of Ukraine. He was attached to the
British Embassy in Kyiv but was embedded in Ukraine’s Ministry of
Foreign Affairs, the first foreigner to hold such a position. While in
Kyiv, he also advised and provided training for five other government
ministries and worked directly with three other cabinet ministers:
Health, Education and the Deputy Prime Minister.
