Nothemba Jessica Sonjica was born and raised in the Eastern Cape. She obtained her law degree from the University of Fort Hare.

She is an admitted attorney with right of appearance in the High Court, Supreme Court of Appeal and Constitutional Court. Nothemba is currently studying towards her Masters in Human Rights Protection and she is also an Accredited Mediator. She describes herself as a gender activist and her passion for gender equality is what ultimately paved the way for her current role as a Legal Officer at the Commission for Gender Equality.

August 12, 2024 S5E19 - Nompilo Nyandeni, Paralegal
Nompilo Nyandeni is a qualified Paralegal Practitioner, Bcom Law student and Sister in law mentee. She also holds a diploma in Public Management and Economics from the Durban University of Technology and a certificate in Labour Law from the University of Cape Town . Nompilo works as an Investigating Officer in the Labour Law Section at the Provincial Government. Nompilo has demonstrated leadership skills through her involvement in various leadership structures including the RCL. her dedication has earned her to participate in a programme called Emerging Leaders in the Public Service amongst 99 other young people across the Province. As a born-again Christian, she values excellence, integrity, honesty, respect, love, and family, and is dedicated to applying her knowledge of the law to become a representative who makes a positive impact. Outside of her professional interests, Nompilo finds joy in spending time with her sisters and engaging in church activities, where she is taught valuable life lessons.

Dr. Radebe is a Doctor in Law, Senior Lecturer, admitted attorney of the High Court and Commissioner for the South African Law Reform Commission (SALRC). She is an agile researcher and lecturer with experience in both Public law and private law. Her doctoral studies focused on Private law, while her practical legal experience focused on public law, private law, property law and trademark prosecution. Keneilwe describes herself as a teacher with great interest in transformation and introducing innovative teaching methods which encourage practical learning, accommodates student diversity, promotes student collaboration, participatory and inquiry-based learning where students also take charge of their own learning and research.

July 15, 2024 S5E17 - Refilwe Lechaba, Legal Advisor
Refilwe is a dynamic, people focused and driven attorney with more than 7 (seven) years’ experience providing legal advice and support to organisations within a wide range of industries including fleet management, financial services as well as fast moving goods. Refilwe was born in Zeerust, a small town in the North West and lived there for most of her formative years before moving to Pretoria. Being the daughter of amazing and hardworking public servant parents who always pushed her to reach greater heights. Her determination and passion to help others led to her pursuing a career in law. She obtained her LLB (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria and recently a Masters in Intellectual Property from the same institution.
One of her greatest career highlights is her role as a law researcher/clerk at the apex court within the Republic of South Africa, namely the Constitutional Court. During her tenure at the Constitutional Court Refilwe had the opportunity to, amongst others, interact with the greatest legal minds in the country and to work on ground-breaking and law-making decisions that the court delivered. Besides her experience at the Constitutional Court, Refilwe has also worked at two of the big five law firms in South Africa where she did work for local and international corporations.
Refilwe is constantly perusing her objective of penetrating and taking up space in various industries, hence her keen interest in the entertainment industry. This pursuit has led to her landing lead roles in commercials for well-known brands as well as supporting roles on two of South Africa’s biggest telenovelas.

July 08, 2024 S5E16 - Philisiwe May, Advocate (PABASA)
Adv. Philisiwe May is a wife, mother and advocate of the High Court of South Africa. She is practising at the Pan African Bar Association of South Africa (“PABASA”) in Sandton. She studied and obtained her BCom(Law) and LLB degrees at the University of Johannesburg (UJ). She completed pupillage in 2020 and commenced a general practice in May 2021. Adv. May discovered her passion for presenting in court during her studies, when she competed in various moot court competitions from her first year of study through to her final year. She won the Child Law Moot Court competition hosted by the University of Pretoria in 2013 and also represented UJ in moot court competitions hosted in Tanzania and Zambia.
She is a vibrant, driven, and hard-working individual who has a passion for curating legal arguments and presenting in court. Her strengths in the legal field include legal research and analysis, legal drafting, and oral advocacy.
Outside of practice, Adv. Philisiwe May has a passion for inspiring and uplifting the youth, black female youth in particular, and has a keen interest in arts and media.
Some of Adv. Philisiwe May’s professional highlights as a junior advocate include forming part of the former president Jacob Zuma’s legal team under the leadership of Adv. Dali Mpofu SC in multiple high-profile matters in 2024.

July 01, 2024 S5E15 - Dr. Tebello Matsela (LLD), Legal Researcher
Dr. Tebello is a qualified advocate in the High Courts of Lesotho. Her legal journey commenced in early 2015, serving as a junior advocate focused on cases involving divorces and land matters. During this period, she gained extensive experience in drafting legal documents, handling litigation, and facilitating legal resolutions. Subsequently, she transitioned to the role of a legal advisor for an engineering company, specializing in the Health and Safety department. In 2017, she ventured into legal academia, pursuing an LLM in Environmental Law with a specialization in Mining Law. This advanced degree equipped her with profound insights into mining sector regulations and laws, honing her skills in legal research and issue resolution.

Driven by her passion for legal research and problem-solving, she has currently completed her LLD degree in the private law department (2024). Her research focuses on African Customary Law and its implication on the Rights of Women in South Africa and Lesotho, with special expertise in succession rights, customary marriage rights and traditional leadership rights. This endeavour has significantly broadened her expertise in legal research and refining her writing skills as a legal professional. She is currently a legal researcher at the university of Pretoria & the North West University in Mafikeng, where she continues to interrogate the customary law system and its impact on the rights of women.
In Her Free time, Dr. Tebello enjoys podcasting and engaging in challenging topics that bring truth, especially to young people and women! Through Her podcast, entitled ‘SimplySheVoicedPodcast with Dr. Tebello’, which is Her online ministry, she equips and empowers the voices of women, by engaging Culture, Law and Religion! She also enjoys being outdoors , laughing out loud, cooking , reading books, spending quality time with friends and family over a good meal! Her old time favourite series is ‘ My wife and Kids!’ She is definitely a 90’s kid! 😝

Today I am in Conversation with two of my mentees from the Sister In Law Mentorship Program (2024 cohort) - we know that all the legends who have been featured on this show started somewhere so let’s take it back to grassroots level in celebration of Youth Month!
Precious Maolana was born and raised in Daveyton, Benoni. She obtained her LLB degree from the University of Limpopo and holds an LLM in Labour Law from the same university. Precious is currently a Candidate attorney awaiting admission and also a mentee under the Sister In Law Mentorship Program 2024 cohort. She works at a boutique law firm and her current areas of practice are Labour Law, Matrimonial Law, Competition and Anti-trust Law, Corporate and Commercial law.
Mbali Ngcobo is a candidate Attorney and Sister In Law Mentorship Program mentee with an LLB degree from North-West University. Mbali works primarily in civil litigation, corporate commercial and regulatory compliance matters. Having served on various leadership structures during her university career such as being the chairperson on the Law Student Chapter , a student representative on the Student Legal Aid and co-founder of the NWU Student Law Review Journal, she is committed to learning and applying the law in order to fuel positive change. Beyond her legal interests, she enjoys connecting with like-minded people and finds joy in speaking and sharing personal insights on the experiences she has overcome that can inspire others in their journey of pursing the best version of themselves in every season.

Sedinam Botwe is a talented young lawyer whose expertise lies in both the traditional and non-traditional aspects of transactional, corporate and commercial law. She works as a Junior Associate with Legal 500 recognized top law firm, Kimathi & Partners, Corporate Attorneys in Accra Ghana, where she practices on the Transactions, Tax and Strategic Advisory Team and the Telecommunications, Media and Technology Team.
As a lawyer, Sedinam advises on a number of big-time lending transactions, mergers and acquisitions, and recently, carbon financing transactions. Sedinam has worked with a number of multinational clients, providing them with bespoke advice on matters of legal compliance, deal structuring, contract drafting and review.
Sedinam actively volunteers with Reformation Community, an NGO focused on transforming society, starting with children. Reformation Community’s Booksville project is dear to Sedinam’s heart, as the project focuses on equipping children with reading and writing skills which Sedinam finds to be a fundamental tool of change, being an avid reader and writer herself.
Sedinam also has a blog, Everyday Legalese, where she discusses the legal implications of everyday transactions and situations, with the aim of demystifying legal concepts for the public.
Sedinam is also a huge enthusiast of diplomacy and international affairs, evidenced by her volunteer work with Lifelink Ghana, an organisation that trains students from basic, secondary and tertiary schools in matters of diplomacy through Model UN sessions.
In her free time, Sedinam enjoys reading, exercising and playing with her pets, Tyrone and Scorsese.

May 27, 2024 S5E12 - Zwonaka Netshifulani, Lawyer & Researcher
Zwonaka Netshifulani is a lawyer and researcher living in Johannesburg. She obtained her LLB from Wits University. Her work includes stints at the Constitutional Court and the State Capture Commission. Her current research focus is on ethics, business conduct and corporate governance in the private sector. On the personal front, she is the first born of four children and thinks her siblings are the best humans ever. She loves reading, sleeping, vintage clothes shopping and cooking. In that order.
After her studies Zwonaka spent a year as an intern in the office of COO of the South African Human Rights Commission. Thereafter spent two and a half years as a candidate attorney at social justice research and litigation NGO - SERI-SA, followed by a year as a research clerk at the Constitutional Court to then DCJ Zondo and then four years as researcher and speechwriter at the State Capture Commission.

Ruth Tanui is an advocate of the High Court of Kenya and is the Founder and Managing Partner of Ruth Tanui and Company Advocates. She specializes in Land law, Employment and Labour relations law and Family law.
Ruth obtained her LLB degree from Moi University and obtained her diploma in law from the Kenya School of Law.
Ruth is the author of a book entitled “Simplified Legal Process of Buying Land in Kenya.”
She founded a platform called “Lawyers helping each other”, which she started with a focus of assisting lawyers and advocates navigate their journeys in the legal profession.
