School education in Russia consists of elementary, middle and high school. Today we're going to talk about the elementary school. It lasts for 4 years.
Kids go to the first grade at the age of 6 or 7. The main task of elementary school is to provide the minimum basic set of knowledge: reading, writing, elementary maths. In addition, children are engaged in music, physical education, drawing.
In the 2nd grade children start to learn a foreign language. Usually it's English and sometimes it's German or French.
Each class has its own teacher who teaches almost all the subjects. The amount of lessons per day is no more that 4-5.
School education in Russia is free for everyone. Parents have to buy only textbooks.

Today's dialogue:
Russian stereotypes about America! Bad stereotypes…
– Let's talk about stereotypes about America… – What stereotypes about Americans…? Well… It's considered that Americans are usually fat, I beg your pardon… For some reason in Russia we think that they are not very smart. – Yes, by the way, I would even say that everyone says «stupid Americans». – I'm trying to pick words. What else? Nevertheless… of positive stereotypes… There's this… I hardly can divide… if it's propaganda or not… that they have no history, that they don't know the geography of other countries, so to speak, except America…

Transcript:

So if she... – I can't tell anything to Zinaida Mikhailovna, she has left. – Where to? – With her lover to Caucasus. – What do you mean with a lover? And you're speaking so calmly about it? Such an interesting man you are… – Excuse me, Ulyana Andreyeva, I'm busy… – You have some character, huh?… If I were your wife, I would have run away too... – If you were my wife, I would have hanged myself.– Jerk!

Lyrics:
Happy Worker's Day!
Here is the text:
Translation On May 1st, we celebrate International Workers' Day. It was a very important holiday of the Soviet Union, celebrated with parades and demonstrations in the centre of the major cities. The biggest celebration was traditionally organised in Red Square. Today May Day has lost its political meaning. It's just a holiday of spring, good mood and joy. Of course they still organise demonstrations, but more often people go to city parks, go out to enjoy nature and have some barbecue, and just have a good time.

Happy Cosmonautics Day!
Here is the text:

In this terrible time let's bring more beauty to our lives.
Translation:
Saint Petersburg is one of the biggest cities of Russia, as well as its cultural capital. It has several nicknames: Northern Capital, Northern Venice, Northern Palmyra. Usually we call it simply Peter. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703, this city became a capital of the Russian Empire for more than 200 years. Today Petersburg is considered the most beautiful city in Russia. Its wonderful palaces, fortresses, cathedrals impress everyone who comes there. Besides that, Peter is world famous with so called «white nights». They last from the end of May till the beginning of July. It's is the best time for visiting this wonderful place.
Song lyrics:
