Svenja Deininger is an artist who currently lives and works in Vienna and Milan. She was born in Vienna and was educated at the Kunsteakademie Dusseldorf and the Kunstakademie Munster.

Svenja has had solo exhibitions at the Secession in Vienna, the Norton Museum of Art in West Palm Beach, Florida and the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska. She has also had solo exhibitions internationally, including Federica Schiavo Gallery in Rome and Galerie Martin Janda in Vienna among others. She’s participated in group exhibitions at Bob van Orsouw Gallery in Zurich, Josh Lilley Gallery in London, Patricia Law Contemporary in Gstaad, the Wiels Center for Contemporary Art in Brussels and the University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor, to name a few.

Brian met up with Svenja at her current show titled ‘Crescendo’ at Marianne Boesky Gallery and they spoke about her well travelled life, painting between cities, music, texture, composition and more. Here’s our conversation…

This week on Sound & Vision, a re-release of a conversation with Devan Shimoyama on the occasion of his opening of Devan Shimoyama: Cry, Baby, his first museum solo exhibition at the Andy Warhol Museum. Spanning his young career, the exhibition includes painting, photography and sculpture, and a series of new works that will be on view for the first time.

Devan received his BFA from Penn State University in 2011 and his MFA from Yale University in 2014. Shimoyama has exhibited throughout the United States, including at De Buck Gallery, Lesley Heller Gallery, and Kravets Wehby Gallery in New York in NY; Samuel Freeman Gallery and Zevitas Marcus Gallery in Los Angeles, CA; Alter Space, San Francisco, CA; Emmanuel Gallery, Denver, CO; and internationally at Frieze London and in Realities in Contemporary Video Art at the Fondation des Etats Unis, in Paris, France. His work has been featured in publications such as The Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, New American Paintings ,Vice, Creators Project,  and Saatchi Art’s ‘Best of 2014’. Devan is currently a professor at Carnegie Mellon University, and lives and works in Pittsburgh, PA. Based in Bushwick, Brooklyn, Jonathan Chapline is a painter investigating digital aesthetics and exploring how technology impacts the way we mediate the world around us. He grew up in Waco, TX and received a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Painting. He currently has a solo exhibition, 'Material Memory' at The Hole gallery in New York. He has showed in group exhibitions at CANADA Gallery in New York, Beers Gallery in London, and Annarumma in Naples. He has also recently collaborated with the Belgium based Case Studyo on a edition of porcelain sculptures.

Cindy Ji Hye Kim lives and works in New York.

She received her BFA from RISD and her MFA from Yale.

Her work has been featured in solo presentations at Cooper Cole, Toronto; Interstate Projects, NY; and Helena Anrather, NY. She has shown in group exhibitions at UncleBrother, Gavin Brown's Enterprise, NY; Foxy Production, NY; DC Moore, NY; Thierry Goldberg, NY; and the Abrons Art Center, NY amongst others.

Allison Janae Hamilton is an artist born in Kentucky, raised in Florida, and on her family's farm in western Tennessee. She has exhibited at museums and institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art (New York, NY); MASS MoCA (North Adams, MA); Storm King Art Center (New Windsor, NY); the Studio Museum in Harlem (New York, NY); the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery (Washington, DC); The Jewish Museum (New York, NY); Atlanta Contemporary (Atlanta, GA); (Fundación Botín (Santander, Spain); Tacoma Art Museum (Tacoma, WA); the Brighton Photo Biennial (Brighton, UK); and the Istanbul Design Biennial (Istanbul, Turkey). Allison has been awarded artist residencies at the Studio Museum in Harlem (New York, NY); Recess (New York, NY); Fundación Botín (Santander, Spain); and the Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Stu dy Program (New York, NY). Barbara Takenaga is an artist living and working in New York City. Barbara grew up in Nebraska and got her BFA and MFA at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

Her recent solo exhibitions include DC Moore Gallery in NYC, Gregory Lind Gallery in San Francisco, and a 20-year survey at the Williams College Museum of Art, curated by Debra Bricker Balken, accompanied by a catalogue published by DelMonico Books|Prestel.  Her large-scale wall projects include Space/42 of the Neuberger Museum and the Hunter Lobby of MASS MoCA.  Other recent exhibitions include a two-person exhibition at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, a solo show at the Huntington Museum in WV and a group show, Chaos and Awe at the Frist Museum of Art in Nashville. 

Her work is in the collection of the Library of Congress in DC, the San Jose Museum of Art, the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill, The Museum of Nabraska art amongst many others. She has taught at Williams College, the University of Denver and Washington, St. Louis.

Matthew Ritchie is an artist born in England who lives and works in New York City. Paul Wackers was born in New Haven, Connecticut in 1978. He graduated with his BFA from Corcoran College of Art and Design in Washington, DC with a degree in Fine Arts, and earned his MFA in Paintings from the San Francisco Art Institute. Wackers has exhibited nationally and internationally in Belgium, Denmark, Canada, Peru, San Francisco, CA, Los Angeles, CA, and New York, NY.

He completed a large-scale public mural for The James Hotel (New York, NY) and has been featured in Paper Magazine, Hyperallergic, Juxtapoz, New American Painting, and Art Practical. He was a visiting artist lecturer at Brooklyn College, and has participated in residencies at Byrdcliffe Guild (Woodstock, NY) and the Nordic Artist’s Centre Dale (Sunnfjord, Norway). In 2009 he won the Tournesol Award from the Headlands Center for the Arts (Sausalito, CA), and was a SECA award finalist.

His work is held in numerous private and public collections, including the Chevron Corporation (San Ramon, CA), Fidelity Investments (Boston, MA), Wellington Management (Boston, MA), New York Presbyterian Hospital (New York, NY), University of Texas Southwest Medical Center (Dallas, TX), and the West Collection (Oaks, PA).

Walter Robinson is a New York artist and art critic. He has exhibited his work at several New York City galleries since the 1980s, including Haunch of Venison, Lynch Tham and Metro Pictures. "Walter Robinson: Paintings and Other Indulgences," a retrospective exhibition of 90 works dating from 1979 to 2012, opened in 2014 at the University Galleries at Illinois State University in Normal, IL, and traveled this winter to Moore College in Philadelphia; its final appearance was at Jeffrey Deitch in SoHo.

He was also the founding editor of Artnet Magazine (1996-2012) and news editor at Art in America (1980-1996). He also served as art editor of the East Village Eye (1983-85) and co-published and co-edited Art-Rite magazine during 1973-77. Walter was also a correspondent for Art TV Gallery Beat, a public access television show in the late '90s, and a cofounder of Printed Matter, the New York bookstore devoted to publications by artists.
