Today -  Andre Tabler doesn’t fully realize it, but he’s a pretty lucky kid. The 6-year-old Mansfield resident was the final person to have his name drawn Friday afternoon for a $10,000 scholarship from the Ohio Department of Health's Vax-2-School program. 

Also, Fredericktown’s school board voted Tuesday to approve the resignation of superintendent Susan Hayward, which will take effect Jan. 2, 2022.  She’s leaving to pursue another professional opportunity, The board also voted for the district to pay out Hayward's accrued and unused personal and vacation time. Board member Patty Miller initially made the motion to add this stipulation to the vote.

Today - Nearing the end of its legislative year, Mansfield City Council is expected to give second reads to legislation that will impact the upcoming year. A temporary spending plan for next year, along with a proposed 0.25 percent income tax to benefit the city's parks system, are both on today’s busy agenda. The council will also formally select committees and committee chairs for 2022-2023.

Fredericktown graduate Colton Riley has been selected the Ohio State Highway Patrol Mount Gilead Post Trooper of the Year for 2021. The announcement was released on Friday.

Today - A beloved tradition returned to downtown Mansfield on Friday night. That meant horse-drawn carriage rides, live music and of course, the lighting of the city’s massive Christmas tree.

Also, like Mansfield, Ashland had a great celebration over the weekend as well. And Ashland Mayor Matt Miller announced Saturday evening that the owner's of Grandpa's Cheese Barn were the anonymous donors who gifted Ashland $100,000 in November to bring Christmas spirit downtown.

Today - this week Loudonville Council President Matt Young announced that he’ll make a run for the newly formed 67th District of the Ohio House. The new district will include all of Ashland County and parts of Medina. Ashland and parts of Medina and Holmes counties have been represented by District 70’s Darrell Kick since 2017. Kick is a republican from Lakeville. He’ll vacate the seat on Dec. 31, 2022.

Today - Putting up the Christmas tree is a beloved tradition in many households, but the Smith family takes this yuletide ritual to a whole new level. The family behind Shelly Smith and Sons Ltd. has helped the city of Mansfield put up its massive Christmas tree downtown every year since 1957. The towing and crane service provider donates the time, labor and equipment each year.

Also, over the past few holiday seasons, we started shooting videos of Knox County High School choirs singing holiday songs. It received a great response from our readers, and gave us a chance to spotlight some very talented students.

Today - as a little girl, Taylor Davis learned the joy of giving back from her grandmothers. Every year, they would take her and her sister to a department store, where each girl would pick out a toy to donate to a child in need. This year, she’s purchased over 300 toys. The toys will be given away during the Project One / ARC Empowerment Center’s “Deck the Halls with Children’s Laughter” toy drive.

Also, Thayer Ridge Park is one of several parks, river accesses and trails in which Santa Claus’ nine reindeer, and corresponding QR codes, can be found for Reindeer in the Park — a challenge run by the Knox County Park District to encourage people to shop local and donate to Knox County Food for the Hungry. In addition to encouraging local shopping and donations, Reindeer in the Parks is a community education tool.

Next, Thanksgiving is a time for family gatherings and festivities, and we know that many of you may be traveling over the next few days to see loved ones during the holiday weekend. But as motorists travel from one destination to another, traffic increases and the potential for unforeseen crashes arises. That’s why through the 28th, the Mansfield Division of Police will be participating in High Visibility Traffic Enforcement. This traffic enforcement will target high crash areas throughout the city and focus on OVI, distracted aggressive driving, seatbelt violations, a major cause of injury crashes.
