Today - The cafeteria at Ontario Middle School was unrecognizable Thursday night, transformed into a whimsical ballroom with twinkly lights, a disco ball and a rollout dance floor. Prom guests danced the night away... But it wasn't a high school prom -- it was Ontario's first annual Senior Citizen Prom.

It allows students to continue to attend school in person after COVID-19 exposure if they remain symptom-free and wear masks indoors. They also wouldn’t be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities like sports, band and social clubs during their quarantine period.

Today - A teacher at Shiloh Middle School recently received the largest individual grant ever given by the Richland County Retired Teachers Association or RCRTA. Matt Anderson, who teaches computer science, STEM and robotics, filled out the grant application on a whim. He said he was ecstatic at the opportunity to bring a 3D printer to the school.

Can you hire a licensed, commercial nuisance wild animal control officer to trap and take away from your property live animals that may carry rabies, such as raccoons, skunks and possums? Today - Last week, Rose Feagin was appointed to fill a vacant Ontario City Council seat. Feagin was chosen by fellow members of the Richland County Democratic Party to fill the seat of former council member Michelle Webb, who resigned in September. 

Also, interim risk reduction measures for the Knox Cattle Company Dam on Yauger Road could get underway in the next few weeks. Stephen Samuels, outside counsel for the City of Mount Vernon, said in a telephone pre-trial conference on Friday that he expects the Ohio Department of Natural Resources to distribute a plan early this week detailing what those measures are.

The first phase of a planned comprehensive wage study for some Richland County employees is now complete. The project began more than two years ago but was slowed by the pandemic. Today - a shortage of school bus drivers is straining districts across the country. And Richland County is no exception. At the end of September parents of Lexington students received a text alert: “There was no driver available for Bus 17. Student pickup would be delayed by at least an hour.”

A Mount Vernon Police Officer was injured while investigating a domestic violence incident Friday afternoon on the 100 block of East Burgess Street, according to a press release issued Friday night by Chief Robert Morgan.
