Today - Senator Sherrod Brown is visiting Shelby this morning to address the workers on strike against ArcelorMittal. Brown will likely begin his visit at the union hall, then walk to the picket lines, according to union president Norm Shoemaker. Members of the United Steel Works Local 3057 have been on strike since their contract expired on October 31st. Shoemaker and Brian Sealy, a regional representative for USW, say the company’s representatives walked out of negotiations just hours before the contract expired.

Also, five generations gathered last week to celebrate their patriarch’s century of life. Robert Moore, a World War II veteran, and long-time Knox County resident, turned 100 years old.

Today - Mansfield City Council has approved the three-year lease of a mobile security camera system for city police. It’s a piece of equipment that Chief Keith Porch said was a "force multiplier" for his department. Council voted unanimously to lease the mobile security camera system from LiveView Technologies, a company based in Utah, at an amount not to exceed $70,200 annually.

Also, Ashland County Commissioners continue to inch along with progress toward building a new dog shelter, but have yet to receive any of the $600,000 a group of dog lovers and the community raised for the project.

Today - Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced that the Mansfield Police Department, Richland County Sheriff's office and Crawford County Sheriff's department all received grant funding. Locally, $69,344 is headed to the Richland County Sheriff's Office. The Mansfield Police will get $53,973. And the Crawford County Sheriff's Office is getting $23,919.

Also, the three Republican candidates running for Mount Vernon City Council's at-large seats all won in Tuesday's general election, setting up an all-Republican Council beginning January 1st, 2022.

Today - Richland County Prosecutor Gary Bishop asked county commissioners for additional funds to help stop his office from acting as a "revolving door" for young attorneys. Commissioners are in the process of conducting budget hearings with all of the county departments. They plan to have a 2022 budget finalized by the end of the year.

Today - Nearly 500 employees at ArcelorMittal are on strike after the company and United SteelWorkers Local 3057 failed to come to an agreement during contract negotiations. ArcelorMittal employees voted overwhelmingly in favor of a walkout when their contract expired at midnight on Sunday, according to Brian Sealy, a USW representative.

Also, last week, The former vice president of the United States, Mike Pence, spoke to students at Ashbrook Center. At one point during the 50-minute talk, Pence acknowledged the chaotic day surrounding the events on Jan. 6 when protesters sieged the Capitol on the day the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives met to certify Joe Biden’s victory in November’s presidential election.

Today -Andrew Keller was just introduced as the first-ever Richland County administrator, the 35-year-old will now get hands-on experience in helping run a local government. He believes local government is the bedrock of the nation's democracy. Keller, an attorney who spent the last decade in the Richland County Prosecutor's Office, was one of two hires announced by county commissioners.

Also, Ashland City Schools is developing a district-wide mobile app for students, teachers, parents and community members after seeing success from the same app geared for the high school. Ben Spieldenner, the district’s director of tech integration and innovation, said he’d like the app to be available for download by January, after winter break.

Today - The Richland County Task Force on Racism has announced plans for an Equity Challenge. It’s an online effort to help residents learn how systemic racism impacts the community.

Today - The Richland County Veterans Honor Bus took group of 38 veterans to the nation's capital last month. Among them were Jack Cowell, a 97-year-old World War II Navy veteran, David Nauman, 93, a Korean War Army veteran, and Myles Weimer who served in the Marines until 1979.
