Today - A beloved tradition returned to downtown Mansfield on Friday night. That meant horse-drawn carriage rides, live music and of course, the lighting of the city’s massive Christmas tree.

Also, like Mansfield, Ashland had a great celebration over the weekend as well. And Ashland Mayor Matt Miller announced Saturday evening that the owner's of Grandpa's Cheese Barn were the anonymous donors who gifted Ashland $100,000 in November to bring Christmas spirit downtown.

Today - this week Loudonville Council President Matt Young announced that he’ll make a run for the newly formed 67th District of the Ohio House. The new district will include all of Ashland County and parts of Medina. Ashland and parts of Medina and Holmes counties have been represented by District 70’s Darrell Kick since 2017. Kick is a republican from Lakeville. He’ll vacate the seat on Dec. 31, 2022.

Today - Putting up the Christmas tree is a beloved tradition in many households, but the Smith family takes this yuletide ritual to a whole new level. The family behind Shelly Smith and Sons Ltd. has helped the city of Mansfield put up its massive Christmas tree downtown every year since 1957. The towing and crane service provider donates the time, labor and equipment each year.

Also, over the past few holiday seasons, we started shooting videos of Knox County High School choirs singing holiday songs. It received a great response from our readers, and gave us a chance to spotlight some very talented students.

Today - as a little girl, Taylor Davis learned the joy of giving back from her grandmothers. Every year, they would take her and her sister to a department store, where each girl would pick out a toy to donate to a child in need. This year, she’s purchased over 300 toys. The toys will be given away during the Project One / ARC Empowerment Center’s “Deck the Halls with Children’s Laughter” toy drive.

Also, Thayer Ridge Park is one of several parks, river accesses and trails in which Santa Claus’ nine reindeer, and corresponding QR codes, can be found for Reindeer in the Park — a challenge run by the Knox County Park District to encourage people to shop local and donate to Knox County Food for the Hungry. In addition to encouraging local shopping and donations, Reindeer in the Parks is a community education tool.

Today - Stunning, shocking, indescribable, all of those words played out on Saturday in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The Wolverines and coach Jim Harbaugh finally administered that day of reckoning that was surely due, but few believed it would happen this year.

Today -  two of 17 people being held captive in Haiti have been released, according to the organization who sponsored the mission trip. Christian Aid Ministries, based in Holmes County, announced on its website Sunday that two hostages who were released are safe, in good spirits and being cared for.

Today - In 2022 The Richland County Solid Waste Management Authority will explore hiring a countywide environmental enforcement officer. Director Eddie Hale told county commissioners this week that he plans to visit townships around in the county to gauge interest in the position, which could help combat infractions like illegal dumping.

Also, Tami Ruhl, “Creating Healthy Communities” coordinator for Knox Public Health, presented a rundown of the county's draft Active Transportation Plan to Mount Vernon City Council members on Monday. Active transportation describes all of the ways to get around without using a motorized vehicle. It includes walking, biking, wheelchairs, scooters, skateboards, and public transit.

Today - a new $43,560 state grant will allow the Mansfield Police Department to add 24 additional body cameras for officers according to Chief Keith Porch. The award is part of the $4.8 million that’s been awarded statewide through the Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant. It’ll allow the MPD to buy 24 additional body cameras and more kiosk docking stations, upping its total to 40 cameras and seven charging stations.

Also, from KnoxPages - Knox County Health Commissioner Julie Miller has announced she will retire next year. Miller announced her retirement to the Knox County Board of Health during the group’s recent meeting. Her last day will be July 1st.
