The guys look around the NHL and look at the standings. They wrap with the upcoming schedule for the Stars.
Gavin recaps the Stars win over the Blackhawks. He talks about the fourth line giving the team the best chance of winning and Pete Deboer realizing that in the third period and riding the fourth line to the end. Scott Wedgewood got injured during the game and Jake Oettinger came into the game in relief. The Stars get set to host a good LA Kings team on Tuesday.
The Stars got Jake Oettinger back but they came up short 6-3 against Nashville. Gavin points out the main goal of the game Friday night was to come out of it with a healthy Jake Oettinger and they did that. He brings up something that he’s been seeing around the NHL lately with teams pulling their goalies too early, and he believes the Stars did it Friday when they were down one with still 2:36 to play and it leads to a game ending empty netter from Nashville. Gavin answers tweets sent in from listeners to close out.
The Stars dominated the Minnesota Wild 7-2. Gavin talks about Sean Shapiro pointing out to go high on the rookie goaltender for Minnesota and the Stars did that all game. Gavin talks about Scott Wedgewood coming out strong after his night off Monday. He touches on Jason Robertston continuing to stay hot and Nils Lundkvist getting his first goal of the season. There were a lot of positives but the one big negative was another 5 on 3 for the Wild because of Stars penalties, they have to work on cutting those down. Gavin plays Flyers John Torterella going after a reporter for his report on Kevin Hayes earlier this week.
Hosts Sean Shapiro and Gavin Spittle highlight the tremendous Matt Murray shutout story in Minnesota. The guys also deep dive into the success the Stars have killing penalties and scoring shorthanded goals. They also explain where the loss of Miro Heiskanen is being missed most. Then Spits and Suds goes around the NHL highlighting the success of the Winnipeg Jets, the Cutter Gauthier trade drama, the Connor Bedard injury and more.
The Stars blank the Minnesota Wild 4-0 Monday and it was behind 25 year old Matt Murray getting his first start of the season after 11 straight games of Scott Wedgewood. Gavin loves that Pete Deboer pulled the trigger on starting Murray. Gavin talks about how after three losses in a row, it was time to make this move and it paid off big time. Gavin points out how the Stars had 12 minutes of penalties and the Wild didn’t capitalize on any of the power plays. Dallas had two short handed goals as they continue to do well with penalty kills.
The Stars play the Minnesota Wild in back to back games this week. Wild play by play announcer Joe O’Donnell joins Gavin to preview the upcoming two games. They talk about the crazy game on Saturday with the Wild beating the Blue Jackets in overtime and Marc Andre-Fleury tying Patrick Roy for 2nd in all time wins in the NHL. They preview the game by looking at the players from both teams and the matchups.
The Stars had another slow start to the game against Nashville and were unable to pull through with a win after a 4-3 loss to Nashville. Gavin talks about the bad and the good with the Stars lately and takes a look ahead at the upcoming schedule for Dallas as they will play the same two teams in the next three games.
Dallas Morning News Stars beat reporter Lia Assimakopoulos joins Spits and Suds following the Pete DeBoer press conference to give us the latest Miro Heiskanen injury news. How will they replace Miro, do they have any cap space to make a move, and how the locker room is reacting to the injury? Lia and host Gavin Spittle also discuss the craziness of last night's Stars/Avs game, the healthy scratch rotation and the biggest position of need at the trade deadline.
The Stars let one get away from them as the Avalanche scored to tie the game late in the third period and won the game in overtime. Gavin and Robert Tiffin recap the game and talk about the Stars letting it get away from them after being up 4-2. They touch on the player performances and in particular, how good Wyatt Johnston looked in the game. The guys answer tweets sent in by listeners.
