With the Rangers down to the last three weeks, what else is there to discuss but what's in front of the Rangers? John and Evan break down the sprint to the finish and how the Rangers must break season-long trends to get to the playoffs. Then Rangers manager Skip Schumaker joins the fellas. And he's got a good case for Ezequiel Duran to finish in the top 10 of MVP voting. He is also living in the moment of the playoff race. John gets him to break down how big a TCU fan he's become now that his son Brody is a Horned Frog (and he's a really big TCU fan). And finally, Skip reveals just how difficult it is to deal with Evan on a daily basis, a story John has heard from managers too numerous to count over the years.
SportsDay Insiders Kevin Sherrington, Evan Grant and Calvin Watkins look at the Cowboys' final cuts, including the surprising exits of Joe Milton and Jaydon Blue. Calvin says the Cowboys may yet bring back Milton, who lost the backup QB job to Sam Howell. Evan asks if either is really good enough if Dak Prescott goes down. Jacob deGrom's start Monday gives the Rangers hope he can still come up big in the September push, but Kevin's not buying. He asks why Rangers such as Evan Carter can't do what's asked of them. Bunt, hit behind the runner, take the extra base. If they're not going to hit, they've got to make up for it somewhere else.
With the Rangers ricocheting all over the place, John and Evan try to follow along, but one thing sticks out - the return of Corey Seager's bat and its impact on the lineup. The fellas also talk about the remaining schedule and raise a caution flag. Beware the Mariners! Then Andrew Heaney joins them to discuss his memories of the 2023 season from the importance of spring training alongside Nathan Eovaldi to bringing the team "Higher" and his big last-minute start in the AL Division Series. Also, how did he get that mic drop moment out of Corey Seager? And finally, John wanders through the archives to find examples of when the Rangers have been low-hit multiple times in a season.
SportsDay Insiders Kevin Sherrington, Evan Grant and Joe Hoyt analyze the hot points on the Cowboys' depth chart, particularly at cornerback and linebacker. Joe shuts down Kevin's bid to give Joe Milton a few sub-packages and tells us if this team is good enough to make the playoffs. Kevin and Evan detail the case for Zeke Duran as the team's MVP and discuss where he fits best in the Rangers' future. Second base? Third? Shortstop? Center field? Seems like he can play them all. And the guys bid Dolly Parton a fond farewell.
Pudge is here! On the eve of the 1996 playoff team reunion, Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez joins the fellas to discuss walking out of a corn field at the Field of Dreams, another trip to Cooperstown, Johnny Oates' impact on his career and his memories from that first playoff run. John and Evan, meanwhile, break down the incredible dichotomy of what scoring first means to the Rangers and consider whether the club should bring Sebastian Walcott to the big leagues for September. And, finally, John cracks open the vault to go over a few more numbers from that special 1996 season.
SportsDay Insiders Kevin Sherrington, Evan Grant and Calvin Watkins discuss the Cowboys' signing of DeSoto's own Von Miller. Calvin tells us that Von plans to play 10 to 15 snaps a game, and Kevin says if he's going to get nine sacks again, it'll require a world-record success rate. Otherwise, Calvin says the defense under Christian Parker looks better than it did at this time last year under Matt Eberflus. Kevin and Evan try to make sense of the Rangers' most confounding season ever, one in which a .500 record might be enough to get them in the playoffs. Can they do it with Corey Seager taking days off in the last quarter of the season? And what will be Seager's future if Ray Davis decides to reset his books in the offseason? All that and more.
The trade deadline has passed, the Rangers stood pat and waited for everybody to get healthy, and now John and Evan have to make sense of where they stand, which is where they seemingly always stand: stuck in the middle. Evan points out the importance of this week's road trip, especially with Houston hosting the same two losing teams next week. Then Bobby Witt, the elder, joins the guys to talk about his quick rise to the majors, the 1996 pitching staff and being the father to one of the most electric players in the game. And, since his career was impacted by the 1994-95 strike, and he now works for an agency, we had to talk about the possibility of a work stoppage after this winter. His view isn't sunny.
SportsDay Insiders Kevin Sherrington and Evan Grant discuss the impact of the late Don Nelson, who, with his son, Donnie, gave the Mavs clarity and an icon, not to mention the makings of the franchise's only title. Kevin asks Evan if he's willing to bet on the Rangers, who, no matter what happens, always seem to come back to .500. Joe Hoyt joins the guys to analyze the impact of Quinnen Williams, Kenny Clark and others in the locker room. Bottom line: They're not as noisy as they used to be with Micah Parsons and Trevon Diggs, but they may all be on the same page for a change. Joe also says it's not lip service when Jerry Jones tells us he'd be willing to trade draft picks to finish out the roster, if it comes to that. Bonus: Did Joe blame his teammate, Calvin Watkins, for the Cowboys' opening loss to the Eagles last year?
Well, the boys have made it through 50 episodes without strangling one another and to celebrate Rangers legend Will Clark joins the show to reminisce about his time in Texas, the great run of 1996 and the camaraderie of that time. And, yes, all of us old-timers gripe how that same element doesn't seem to exist today in MLB. John and Evan also break down the Rangers activity - or relative lack thereof - at the trade deadline. Why didn't the Rangers do more? Is this season still salvageable. And then in the Archives in Arlington, John goes back to 1996 and the immediate impact that was made by the acquisition of John Burkett from the Florida Marlins, where Evan was just a young pup of a beat writer at the time.
With Kevin away on "assignment," Evan seizes the microphone and brings in fellow Rangers insider Shawn McFarland for a lively breakdown of the Rangers' trade deadline activity. Who knew we could make 40 minutes out of the team trading Josh Smith for Adam Macko? But the guys break down the lack of activity, the reasons for it and what it means. In addition, do we, like the Rangers, believe this team, as constructed, is good enough to win the AL West?
