In this episode we interview a data scientist who has developed an application that easily and affordably measures an individuals stress levels and indicates when the best time to do harder, quality training sessions is and when the best time to focus on recovery is.
Marco Altini of HRV4Training is a scientist working at the intersection between technology, health and human performance. Almost a decade ago Marco learnt, through studies, the effects of stress on human performance and had the idea to create an application that could easily measure physiological stress using the phone camera. The app combines heart rate variability (HRV) measurements with subjective annotations of sleep quality, motivation, perceived performance during the last trainings and muscle soreness to provide you with guidance on a day to day basis.
In this podcast episode, we discuss the studies about the effects of stress on human performance, as well as the HRV4Training Application.
You can learn more about HRV4Training at their website (www.hrv4training.com) or Instagram page (@hrv4training) or by downloading the application in the app store.

[Preview] Nikki Johnstone has raced over 16 Marathons this year and has averaged a time of well under 2:30. In addition, he has also raced numerous Half Marathons (average under 1:10), 10k’s and even a couple of Ultra Marathons.. Nikki Johnstone is a racing machine!
Born in Scotland and now living in Germany, Nikki began running at the ripe old age of 28, completing his first couple of Marathons “as challenges” in 3:21 and 3:19.
Little did he know at the time that he was lighting a flame that would ignite progressively over the coming years to see him run over 50 Marathons, over 100 Half Marathons, 10k’s and 5k’s and the occasional Ultra Marathon. As of September 2018, he also holds the World Record for the fastest Marathon dressed as Elvis Presley.
Nikki is a full time teacher, trains every day and races “most weekends.” He is the European Yuki Kawauchi (of course, before Yuki went pro).
You can find Nikki on Strava (Nikki Johnstone aka Elvis) and Instagram (_nikkijohnstone_)

This episode is all about the INEOS1:59 Challenge. We were lucky enough to attend this historic event which saw the first man run under 2 hours for a Marathon. Eliud Kipchoge did something that many scientists deemed impossible just a decade or two ago – he ran 1:59:40 for a Marathon.
We arrived 2 days before the event and stayed 2 days after. In this episode, Sweat Elite Founder Matt Fox speaks with Aki Nummela from Runners High Finland all about the event.
