Cast: Shu, Soki, Yurika, Robert (Guest)
    Theme: Language Learning
    Difficulty: ★★★★☆
    Time: 37min
    Language: English
    ◆Description
"Tonight, I’m a little bit emotional." Shu opens this episode with a heartfelt statement; that is, of course, because today’s guest is Shu’s former English teacher, Robert, to whom Shu says he owes much of his success in language learning.
Pronunciation and continuation - these two vital principles form the core of SYNT’s English education program today. Apparently, the origin of these concepts can be traced back to Shu’s interactions with Robert over 10 years ago.
In this episode, we look back at Shu’s middle and high school days and what he was like with Robert, who was himself a language learner while living in Japan. Enjoy deep-diving into the origins of SYNT!

    ◆Description
Leo, a handsome Canadian doctor, has come to Deep-Dive Discussions!
An international man, Leo has roots in China, Japan, and Canada. Having spent more than half his life in Japan, he currently works as a doctor there instead of in his country of citizenship (Canada). His future, however, is yet to be determined - he discloses the fact that, even after spending more than 15 years in the country, he still occasionally feels like a foreigner in the homogenous society that is Japan. As a doctor who is ethnically Chinese and has Canadian citizenship, Leo walks the line between questioning his identity and simultaneously realizing the advantages of being an English-speaking foreign doctor in Japan.
Leo was an upperclassman at the same university as Shu. Leo is known for his excellent fashion sense, his cooking and interior decorating skills, as well as his good looks. This talented, open-minded guest has made this special episode of DDD very exciting. We hope that this episode brings you laughter and warmth.
We present to you a handsome and fashionable neurologist: Leo!

  • 第9回 1 person, 2 identities, 3 languages, 4 countries

    Theme: Language Learning
    Difficulty: ★★★☆☆
    Time: 32min

    ◆Description
In this episode, the three cast members and a guest discuss identity and language.
Shi Jia, our guest, is an ethnically Chinese woman who received most of her education at an international school in Japan. As a young girl, she was surrounded by 3 languages: English at school, Japanese with friends, and Chinese at home. As an adult, she has grown to become a bilingual speaker of Japanese and English.
Shi Jia feels that she constantly juggles two identities, or two "selves": “English Shi Jia” and “Japanese Shi Jia”. Navigating these two selves has caused her, on many occasions, to question her true identity.
The cast members of DDD believe that the source of identity is tied to both ethnic and linguistic factors. Where, then, does Shi Jia place her identity?
We invite you to join our deep-dive discussion into the identity of one multinational woman; a woman whose identity is interwoven between 3 languages and 4 countries.

  • 第7回 Deep-Dive Discussions: beauty and struggle
    Presentation by:Soki
    Cast:Soki, Shu, Yurika
    Theme:Language Learning
    Difficulty:★★☆☆☆
    Time:39min
    Language:English
    ◆概要
    2021年4月から始まったDeep-Dive Discussions(DDD)ですが、このエピソードはここまでの総集編と言えるかもしれません。
    このエピソードでは、Sokiがこれまでの6回の収録を終えて、このポッドキャストの強みを分析し、発表しました。
    Sokiが提示した強みは3つ、すなわち
    1) Yurika
    ◆Description
What, ultimately, is DDD? In this episode, Soki looked back on the two months that have passed since the beginning of this podcast, and elaborated on what he considers to be its strengths. He listed 3 points: 1) Yurika’s English skill, 2) Shu’s and Soki’s real-time struggle, and 3) the anticipation of a diverse host of guests.
The premise of these 3 advantages is that DDD is a mixed-level discussion between C1 and B2 speakers.
The expressions that Yurika uses are excellent materials for language learning. Listeners can utilize this podcast as a source, an input, of proper, sophisticated English.
Simultaneously, the real-time struggles experienced by Shu and Soki provide listeners with the time to join in on the discussion themselves; to fill in the blank with their own words and expressions. Indeed, this is an act of output.
In a nutshell, this podcast provides listeners with the perfect opportunity for both input and output: a serendipitous harmony that the 3 cast members realize during the episode. What’s more, depending on the English level of the guest, the composition of the mixed-level discussion can vary.
In short, we hope that listeners of this podcast will find their own ideal way to enjoy this show; a balance that is just the right amount of both entertainment and education.

  • 第5回 How to process auditory information
    Presentation by:Shu
    Cast:Shu, Soki, Yurika, Shinya (Guest)
    Theme:Language Learning
    Difficulty:★★★★☆
    Time:34min
    Language:English
    Shuのメインアイデアの一つをどうぞ。
    追伸
    今回はゲストがいます!京都大学からShinya YamaSHITAさんです!
    ◆Description
In this episode, a key tenet of SYNT’s English education philosophy comes to light.
“I want to be able to speak English" - at some point in life, you have probably all had this thought. If you are one of these people, understand that time is key when it comes to mastering the art of conversation - a major interest of Japanese learners of English.
Shu clarified in his presentation that it is necessary to recognize written and spoken linguistic information as two completely different modalities. Thus, we must train each ability separately. Why? The reason is time. Time defines the difference between how we process visual and auditory information.
We present to you the longest presentation ever in the series, produced by Shu: “Spoken English and Written English” (6 min).
P.S. This episode includes a guest: Shinya YamaSHITA from Kyoto University!

  • 第4回 Language opens a new world
    「言語学習と”原語”コミュニケーション」
    Presentation by:Soki
    Cast:Shu, Soki, Yurika
    Theme:Language Learning
    Level:★★★☆☆
    Time:29min
    Language:English
    ◆概要
    第二言語学習を通して私たちは新しい認識様式とアイデンティティーを獲得する、とSokiは発表しました。
    しかし、言語を学習するだけでそれは可能となるのでしょうか?Yurikaは一貫してこの点を尋ねました。
    “Let me be philosophical.”
    ◆Description
"By learning a new language, new perspectives can be gained," Soki says in his presentation. Indeed, his argument is supported by many a philosopher. Language, they say, defines the way we recognize the world.
Yurika, however, was not fully convinced. She thought to herself, "is simply learning a language enough to gain a new perspective?"
As Soki sought to put his thoughts into words, Shu attempted to explain: there exists a type of deep communication that goes beyond words, that enables us to have access to our inner and most private self - our core.
Whenever we seek to truly understand something or someone or when we attempt to reveal our heart to another, we ultimately run up against the limitations of our abilities and of language itself. Such circumstances require us to reach for something beyond the surface of words; to access our core. Profound experiences such as these are essential to the process of learning a new language, Shu states. They are what allow us to truly recognize ourselves.
Shu passes the baton to Yurika, who attempts to re-verbalize what was said. "Language is a window," she says, a window through which we can gain the possibility of having access to someone else’s core. Language learning, therefore, is a process through which we can create a new channel into our inner selves, to others, and to the world.
Soki jumps back in, commenting that this is precisely why automatic translators fail to conduct deep and meaningful communication. There are things to be gleaned from the original language that cannot be obtained from a translation, the three cast members agreed.
We present to you: a real, headlong, deep-dive discussion.

  • 第3回 A stepwise process for linguistic input
    「インプット」〜単語、表現、ユーモア〜
    Presentation by:Shu
    Cast:Shu, Soki, Yurika
    Theme:Language Learning
    Difficulty:★★☆☆☆
    Time:32min
    Language:English
    ◆Description
Understanding the mechanism of laughter and humor may be the final frontier in the process of learning English.
In this episode, the main topic was the input of linguistic knowledge. In order to become a C1 speaker, we must have a command of the proper vocabulary as well as a diverse array of natural expressions. Only then can we express ourselves freely and effectively.
Shu proposed a two-step input process: 1) vocabulary & grammar, and 2) expressions. The reasoning behind this process is that a proper understanding of vocabulary and grammar is the fundamental basis for acquiring natural expressions.
After an intensive discussion, the cast members may have discovered a third step: culture and humor.

  • 第2回 The gap between sound perception and recognition
    「リスニング 」〜届く音と聴こえないもの〜
    Presentation by:Soki
    Cast:Shu, Soki, Yurika
    Theme:Language Learning
    Difficulty:★★☆☆☆
    Time:27min
    Language:English
    ◆概要
    C1レベルの英語力を身につけるための一番の障壁は、実はリスニングかもしれません。
    今回はSokiが自身の経験から「音の解像度」についてプレゼンしました。私たちの耳に届いている音と、私たちが実際に認識している音の間には乖離があるようです。
    この差はどこから来るのか。リスニングの困難を乗り越えるにはどうしたらいいのでしょうか。
    P.S.
    Shuは自身が作った発音講座について話したそうでした。
    ◆Description
The ultimate test of an English learner's ability may be their listening skill.
According to Soki, it is important to recognize that there is a disparity between what physically enters our ears and what we actually recognize and can process.
What causes this gap? How can learners of English overcome these barriers to recognizing sounds?
We present to you: "Resolution of sound" by Soki.
