The Syracuse Basketball Podcast signs off on 2019-20 with the inevitable news announced minutes before taping that Elijah Hughes would leave Syracuse for the NBA. In this uncertain coronavirus world, the NBA is on pause and college basketball cancelled Hughes' season instead of it ending on a loss.
The abrupt close was somewhat of a fitting ending for a player that arrived at Syracuse unable to play as a transfers as a team starving for offense still scrapped to the NCAA, somehow bowed out in round one a year later with Hughes, Tyus Battle and Oshae Brissett, then transitioned into one of the most turbulent season in Syracuse history while Hughes exceeded all expectations.
Bobby Manning looked back at Hughes' Syracuse career with Matthew Gutierrez and James Szuba, detailing the five things that stuck out about of the program's great players. Hughes doesn't leave alone. As a surge in transfers strikes college basketball, Jim Boeheim will lose more players than he ever has before. Is that an indictment on the program or a larger college trend falling especially hard on Syracuse?
We also discussed how much the world has drastically changed in the week or so since we last recorded and how the sports world changes without games. Thanks for following Bobby and James all season. Even though we didn't expect it to end the way it did, it didn't lack intrigue and Hughes was a massive reason why. Best of luck to him at the next level, and what do you expect the Orange to look like without him next season?
