Sgt. Michael Chesna was a Weymouth, Massachusetts police officer who was killed in the line of duty on July 15, 2018, after responding to reports of an erratic driver. Chesna approached the suspect, Emanuel Lopes, who struck him in the head with a large rock, disarmed him, and then shot Chesna multiple times with his own service weapon, killing him. Lopes continued his violent spree by shooting and killing Vera Adams, a 77-year-old bystander watching from her window, before being apprehended by police.
