Motivated by jealousy—Melinda Loveless, one of the killers, believed Shanda was involved romantically with her ex-girlfriend Amanda Heavrin—the attackers were Melinda Loveless (16), Laurie Tackett (17), Hope Rippey (15), and Toni Lawrence (15).

Edward Pehowic is a New Hampshire murderer convicted in the 1996 killing of Carol Caswell, who was drowned and beaten at Willand Pond in Somersworth. Pehowic also confessed to the 1990 murder of Sheila Holmes, whose body was found beaten and strangled on railroad tracks in Dover, though at times he wavered on his involvement and was not officially charged in that case.
