Tara Grinstead, a 30-year-old high school teacher and former beauty queen from Ocilla, Georgia, vanished from her home in October 2005 and wasn’t found, sparking one of the biggest missing-person searches in the South. In 2017, Ryan Duke was arrested and confessed to breaking in to steal money for drugs, strangling her when caught, and—along with former classmate Bo Dukes—burning her body in a pecan orchard. However, Duke later recanted, blaming Dukes instead, and at trial Duke was acquitted of murder and convicted only of concealing Grinstead’s death, receiving a 10-year prison sentence while Dukes got 25 years for helping cover up the crime and burning Tara’s body. To this day, some details remain unknown and most of Tara’s remains have never been recovered.
