He is also the author of Down & Delirious in Mexico City (2011), a nonfiction exploration of urban youth subcultures. He has appeared in multiple documentaries (The Day I Met El Chapo, Netflix; The Munchies Guide to Oaxaca, VICE) and is a frequent guest on regional and national radio programs. It’s #Pride month and an important time to celebrate the progress achieved by the #LGBTQ rights movement. On this episode of Tamarindo, we talk about Ana Sheila’s experience as a #queer #Latinx including how she came out to her family, her first kiss, and what she wishes more people can be more mindful of when it comes to the  #LGBTQ community. Before all of that, we introduce our listeners to a new segment what will feature strategies to reduce stress and be more intentional with our actions.  Our wellness enthusiast Ana Sheila will share some tips with Brenda on how to reduce the anxiety of the news.

We asked Dr. Ana-Christina Ramon, co-author of the UCLA Hollywood Diversity Report, Director of Research & Civic Engagement, UCLA Social Sciences, what letter grade she would give Hollywood on their representation of Latinx characters and stories and surprise surprise, Hollywood flunked! She says it she would give Hollywood a D+.  “Out of the top 8 roles in films and TV, 5 to 7 percent are portrayed by Latinx actors,” Dr. Ramon says. She goes on to say that  “When 18 percent of the population is Latinx, this significant underrepresentation is inexcusable!”  We agree with Dr. Ana-Christina Ramon, and so on this episode of Tamarindo, Ana Sheila and Brenda talk about why #Latinx representation is important and share examples of Latinx stories to celebrate and some that make us cringe.  We are especially excited to drop this episode today when trailblazing STARZ Original Series VIDA is back for its second season! #VIDA is a show for the Latinx community and we know you’ll love it. Then we introduce you to our good friend, Rebecca Pleitez, Deputy Director of Grassroots advocacy for the California Primary Care Association, and mommy-in-chief of two, with one on the way. 

Although Rebecca has only been a mom for a few years, her experience is unique in that she’s at times been an entrepreneur, military mom, traveling mom, stay at home mom you name it. As you’ll hear, Rebecca is one of the most authentic people we know so we invited her to keep it real with you'all about #momlife.

A lifelong advocate, Rebecca has been involved in #healthpolicy work and local government, most recently supporting California Assemblywoman Carrillo’s entry into office. We talk to Rebecca about ways we can all be advocates for moms and mujeres everywhere on this special #DiadelasMadres episode!

She especially loves working with and for underserved communities of all shapes and colors, romance languages (she speaks 3 ½), most everything from the 90s, and is deeply committed to her impact on this earth through how she lives and what she eats. In true Tamarindo tradition, we discuss what’s been buggin’ us lately and what we’re celebrating. We chat a bit about #auntbecky and entitled rich kids cheating their way to college #collegeadmissionsscandal and also what we want to see more of on the beach! We are so excited to have Ana Sheila on board and you can expect us to delve into ways to live our lives authentically, healthy and balanced.

Tamarindo con Brenda is back today with a conversation with Christina Igaraividez storyteller, actor, writer and content creator. Whether it’s an ensemble production or a digital short, she is constantly working on how to get people to laugh (and sometimes cry). She is also the co-creator for the digital Latina comedy channel Latinaish TV. Christina is also ensemble member of Teatro Luna (the country’s first Pan-Latina theater company) and with Teatro Luna West (LA chapter)  where she produces and hosts a monthly storytelling show, that exclusively features women of color, called Talking While Female: Storytelling Sessions, located at Studio Luna in Boyle Heights.  You can catch Brenda telling a story this week on February 28, 2019.
