Ryan comes back on the podcast this week to explain Jimmy Donaldson's – aka "Mr Beast"- new antic, which seems to involve ignoring local government protocol in East Africa to build wells and electricity pylons. Though presented as an altruistic act, Ryan explains how these stunts feed into the expansive "Mr Beast" brand, at a time when it looks like Donaldson is running out of ideas. Ryan also explains Donaldson's failed attempts to be accepted by mainstream culture and how, despite his massive following, it seems unlikely he'll ever make a break into mainstream TV.

Currently, Aid is not getting through. You can donate with the knowledge that these funds will be used the instant Aid is allowed into Gaza, but please do make your voice heard in other ways about this. Showing up at protest marches and writing letters to elected MPs are useful acts of solidarity. Please encourage your elected representatives to support calls for a ceasefire, while still bearing in mind a ceasefire is temporary and represents the bare minimum.

Hussein talks to author and journalist Kim Mcintosh about her recent Guardian article about SheaSeven, a Youtuber with a mass following, known for giving out cynical dating advice. Kim talks about how Sheaseven uses her channel to explain how romance should be considered transactional, and the ways in which she believes women should lean into patriarchal standards in order to leverage power against their male partners. Kim explains how Sheaseven's advice should be understood in the context of austerity, and the effects it has had on millennials and Gen Z'ers, and why we must cultivate a culture of caregiving in order to foster and maintain healthier relationships.

This week, Hussein speaks to author and New Yorker columnist Kyle Chayka about his recent New Yorker article "Why The Internet Isn't Fun Anymore".  Kyle explains how the take-over by platforms in the late Aughts and 2010's expanded the internet's regular audience, and turned users into producers and consumers simultaneously – making the internet a place where you were expected to work, and have fun, at the same time. With no signs of that changing, Kyle explains how he's adopted a more conscious, and selective approach to going online, and how he's returned to tradition through the medium of bootlegged flash games.

This week, we talk about the Netflix film Accused (2023), in which a young man travels from London to the countryside and has the worst night of his life, when he is blamed for a terrorist attack on social media. We discuss what the film gets right about pile-ons, and the ways in which violence is presented across different social platforms, as well as some of the bizarre scenarios and characterisation choices that contribute to giving the protagonist the worst night of his life.
