In today’s episode Kate and Betsy interview local author Nina Lohman about her new book “The Body Alone: A Lyrical Articulation of Chronic Pain”. We talk about Nina’s 20 year relationship to pain in the form of headaches, and the power of telling her story.

Today we interview Wendy Hummell, a seasoned law enforcement officer in Wichita, Kansas who after 25 years is now providing wellness resources to law enforcement officers to help them thrive in their work. We talk about surviving in a masculine profession, perfectionism, and the toll the career in law enforcement took on her wellbeing. Wendy shares the trauma she experienced when having premature babies and how finding yoga helped her tap into the effect trauma was having on her nervous system. Wendy shares how she has found purpose and is now focused on influencing the system through her ground-breaking holistic wellness work with law enforcement and her Guns and Yoga podcast.
Today we discuss:
Wendy’s early years in the Bronx with her family and how her parents were “self-proclaimed hippies”. How being raised in a free-spirited and chaotic environment., with a lot of criminal activity, caused her to have a strong sense of right and wrong.
Her strong sense of justice, the influence of shows like Charlie’s Angels and Wonder Woman, and how she knew early on she was going to have a career in law enforcement.
The reality of working in the male dominated profession of law enforcement and how it was necessary to suppress her feminine to succeed.

The reality that women don’t always support one another because everyone is just trying to survive inside the system. How healing herself has helped her daughters and the people around her.

Bio:
Wendy Hummell, is a seasoned law enforcement officer with over 25 years of experience. She started her career in 1996 as an immigration and naturalization specialized and ended her career after 21 years of service with the Wichita police Department where she spent the majority of her career working persons crimes investigations. She also worked homicide, gang, and sex crime cases. Wendy is currently the health and wellness manager for the Sedgwick County Sherriff’s office, she is passionate and committed to helping her fellow first responders learn the various tools of peer support, mindfulness, resiliency, therapy, fitness and more. It is her belief that all law enforcement and first responder agencies should provide resources to their employees so they can not only survive a career in law enforcement but thrive well into retirement. Wendy’s work has been recognized by the Wichita metro crime Commission; she was given the officer of the year award in 2018. She and her husband, who is also a law enforcement officer launched the guns and yoga podcast in 2021 as a platform to provide support and provide resources to law enforcement officers and their families.

Kate has been preparing herself as she has done this 2 other times, whereas Betsy is going in blind not knowing what to expect. Today while we are taking some time off, we are re-releasing a favorite episode on women finding their voice. It is so important that we support one another to speak up and speak out. Our voices are needed at every table.
In this episode, we talk about the process of finding your voice. Why is it hard for us to use our voice?  What are the stories around it and what do we do to speak up, be heard, feel heard and tell our truth?
Today we discuss:
-For much of history women have been silenced, ridiculed, punished, and even killed for their opinions and voices.
-The wound of the patriarchy and the many reasons we have learned to swallow our truth.
-The concept of gaslighting, which is the psychological manipulation that makes a person question their beliefs, sanity, and truths.
-Betsy and Kate share their own personal stories of finding their voices and the barriers they have encountered along the way. They acknowledge that it is a process and a constant work in progress, but they highlight the power and freedom that comes from using their voices to express their authentic selves.
-Throat problems can show up as the inability to speak up for yourself, swallowed anger, stifled creativity and a refusal to change.

We are here again with special guest, Margaret McCaffery (it’s her birthday today!) for part two of this memorable interview. Margaret shares her journey of motherhood and her passion as an advocate for cancer research and awareness.
Today we discuss:
Margaret’s law school experience that included a wedding on Independence Day, the cancer diagnosis of her father in law, and a new baby.
The honor of walking the stage to receive her law degree at Notre Dame with her first son in her arms and the village that supported her.
Her instinctual choice to focus on motherhood and spending time with her young sons, and how this was in line with the lessons she was taught by wise women in her life to honor herself wherever she focused her energy.
Navigating the highs and lows of each basketball season and the joys and challenges of having their sons on the team.
How allowing and supporting her children to make their own decisions about their lives was inspired by her grandmother.
Navigating their son Patrick’s cancer journey at 13, and the priorities and commitments that changed as the family confronted their new reality.
Patrick’s recovery and her commitment to raising funds and advocating for cancer awareness while helping to start the adolescent and young adult cancer program at the University of Iowa.
Her national recognition for her volunteer efforts with the National American Cancer Society and their work with the Coaches vs. Cancer program.
Bio:

Margaret McCaffrey is often referred to as University of Iowa Basketball coach Fran McCaffrey’s wife, but she is a legend in her own right. Margaret was a stellar athlete and played basketball for Muffet McGraw at Notre Dame in the early 90’s. Post graduation, she intended to go to law school at the University of Minnesota, but was called by Coach McGraw to join the coaching staff at ND. It was there she met her now husband Fran McCaffrey, and began law school. Margaret is the mother to four children and has supported them in their interests and basketball careers. In 2014, her son Patrick was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and she spent a year focused on caring for him. Patrick is now cancer free but the McCaffreys have devoted their philanthropic efforts to fighting cancer. They helped start the adolescent and young adult Cancer program at the university of Iowa and have raised millions of dollars. In 2022 she received the National American Cancer Society’s distinguished St. George award for being an outstanding volunteer. She has served on the American Cancer Societies National Board of Directors since 2018, and along with Fran has championed the Coaches vs. Cancer program.
