Most parents want their kids to learn how to be good with money. They instinctively know that a failure to learn how to play the game of money will put their kids at a major disadvantage, making their lives so much harder. But, whilst the majority of parents want to help their kids, most just don’t know how the hell to go about it.
Because this this is such a hot topic with most parents, I decided I would try a Three Episode series on Kids and Money which I’ve called Money Muscles.
In this episode (Part 1) I’ll be joined by Tim Rivett. We will be drawing on our almost 40 years of combined professional experience to discuss why you should be educating your kids about money.

Ben Law is a coach to some of Australia's most successful farming families. He was raised on the land — three generations of farming in his blood — and has spent almost 30 years and more than 40,000 hours alongside farming families, first as their financial adviser and now as their coach. Along the way he learned the truth nobody talks about: what makes or breaks a family legacy isn't the money — it's whether the family can communicate, get aligned, and prepare the next generation before succession arrives.
That's what this podcast is about. Each fortnight Ben sits down with farming families, trusted advisers and industry experts to unpack how to build a family that thrives across generations — strong in business, strong in relationships, and set up to hand over the farm without losing each other.

Today we have Senator Susan McDonald to give us her take on the current Foot & Mouth Disease situation and how the Agricultural Industry can help tackle the problem politically.
Susan grew up on her family’s cattle property near Cloncurry in far north QLD. She studied and worked in the accounting industry before purchasing a chain of butcher shops in Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and ran them for 6 years before deciding to take the plunge into politics.
Susan was elected to the Australian Senate for Queensland and is now the Shadow Minister for Resources and for Northern Australia, and the chairman of the Federal Government’s Rural and Regional Affairs and Transport committee.

Investing in Commercial Property can be complicated and risky if you don’t know what you are doing but if you get it right, it can be a powerful way to build off farm wealth for your family.
The best way to be a successful investor in any area is to educate yourself, and a great way to do this is by listening to highly experienced experts in their fields, just like our guest today. In this episode I discuss off-farm investing into Commercial Property with Dan Dwan, the Managing Director of Colliers International Toowoomba.
Dan and I will be talking about some of the basics of investing in Commercial Property, the risks, what to consider and how to get started.

Today our guest Daniel Elder will be discussing how QRIDA has helped some Queensland rural producers save a collective $3m in interest and Professional advice fees using QRIDA’s Farm Business Analysis Assistance Program.
Daniel comes from the land and grew up near Chinchilla on the Darling Downs in QLD. He has over 15 years experience in the banking sector and is currently the Manager of QRIDA’s Farm Debt Restructure Office.
Just a heads up before we start for anyone who lives outside of Queensland this government program is only available to Queensland based rural producers so whilst there is some good content, this episode might not be as relevant to you as others.

Today’s guest is Dr Terry McCosker.
Terry and I are discussing what a Carbon Credit actually is and how they have the potential to substantially improve the overall profitability and sustainability of some farming operations, resulting in a magnification of a family’s wealth both now and intergenerationally.
The most exciting part is we are discussing the initial findings of one of the world’s largest Carbon Credit trials which Terry has been integrally involved in.
Terry is a Founding Director of RCS Australia which for over 35 years has provided integrated training, education and advisory service to the agricultural sector. He is an internationally acclaimed teacher and has worked in research and property management in both the government and private sectors for almost 55 years.
It has been said his ideas took farming out of a war with nature into an association with it. He introduced Australian farmers to the concept of ecosystem health and developed methods of measuring it, alongside financial health.
Terry has more recently focused his attention on using his experience, education and expertise to assist the farming community to identify and make the most of the opportunities carbon credits could offer.

Today, Ben Forrest (Real Estate Agent and Partner at the Resolute Property Group) and I will be discussing the key things you need to know if you want to successfully sell a farm.
Most farmers and graziers are thinking about buying more land, not selling, but purchasing a new block sometimes requires the sale of some land to fund the new purchase. There are also those nearing retirement that will be either downsizing to a smaller block or selling up entirely and moving into town.
Selling any major asset is a complex and stressful process, so the best results are almost always achieved when you prepare well. The problem is that most of us haven’t got years of experience selling properties, so we will inevitably make some mistakes, unless we find the right people to help us navigate the complexities and avoid the traps that the inexperienced fall into.
As Benjamin Franklyn famously said, “If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail,” and with the value of farms these days, the cost of getting it wrong could be significant.
