Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there.
In this segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee answer a listener question about a diagnostic testing for erectile dysfunction. This listener's urologist has recommended a pharmaceutical penile Doppler ultrasound to help identify the cause of his ED, and he's wondering whether that kind of testing is normal. Dr. Mistry explains that while a variety of factors might come into play, the causes of ED can be grouped into four domains: psychological, hormonal, neurological, and vascular.
Young people are most frequently impacted by the kinds of psychological factors, like stress or performance anxiety, that can kill erections. As part of our holistic approach to urology, NAU Urology Specialists provides access to in-house sex therapists and pelvic floor physical therapists who can help with psychological concerns and mind-body connection. There are also hormonal imbalances, which can wreak all sorts of havoc on the system. Fortunately, the options for hormone therapy have never been better, cheaper, or easier! Nerves also play a big role in both achieving erections and enjoying intercourse. At NAU Urology Specalists, we use biothesiometry, a process that measures temperature and vibration sensation, to ensure the nerves responsible for giving you sensation in your penis are working properly. Finally, there are problems with blood flow--the most common cause of ED. To achieve an erection, blood must flow into the penis. Insufficient arterial inflow can be improved with a number of medications. To maintain an erection, the blood must stay in place. If the issue is leaky valves, the use of penile constriction rings and pelvic floor physical therapy can help maintain your erections.
Penile Doppler ultrasounds can help determine which blood flow concern is causing your ED, but beware any claims that "results are guaranteed," especially by pop-up men's health clinics that only offer one type of treatment for ED. Normal ultrasounds can be manipulated to give the impression of lower or higher blood flow/volume; thus, it is easy to fake vascular changes to justify overpriced ED treatments. True Doppler ultrasounds can help your urologist identify both the cause of your ED and the best treatment options for you.
