Thanks for tuning in to the Armor Men’s Health Hour Podcast today, where we bring you the latest and greatest in urology care and the best urology humor out there.
In this segment, Dr. Mistry and Donna Lee answer a young listener's question about low libido. While a decreased desire for sex can affect men of any age, it is certainly more atypical in very young men. Some obvious causes of low libido are psychological elements like stress, depression, or anxiety, and these can often be treated through some combination of psychotherapy, medication, and/or addressing the root cause (eliminating the source of stress, for example). More serious psychological aversions such as sexual aversion disorder may require specialist therapy, such as the sex therapy offered at NAU Urology Specialists. Beyond psychological considerations, there are physiological causes like hormone imbalances, which may cycle on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Prolactin is one hormone produced by the pituitary gland in the brain that can suppress libido if produced in excess. Simple blood tests can identify if hormones are at the root of your low libido, and medications to regulate hormone levels are easy to take and affordable. Finally, there is the "chicken-and-egg" conundrum Dr. Mistry so often describes: which came first? The low libido or the erectile dysfunction? While you can have one without the other, they are so often co-occurring that diagnosing which one is causing the other presents a significant problem to urologists. The important thing to recognize is that the treatment prescribed will only be effective if the diagnosis is accurate. If you're prescribed testosterone for erectile dysfunction when you're really suffering from low libido due to chronic stress, hormonal therapy may not fully address the issue. Having a thorough evaluation from a holistic urology practice is crucial to obtaining the best health outcome. If you or a young man you love are suffering from low libido, erectile dysfunction, or other atypical urologic complaints, know that our team at NAU Urology Specialists take these complaints in young people very seriously.
