  • The Broken Shelf 104: The Greatest Knight
[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised.
The moniker of "Great" has been granted to many outstanding individuals throughout history but the majority of them are monarchs or leaders of their people. So what made them so great and not other individuals who have have similar or "greater" achievements? It's nearly impossible to quantify because these individuals are all victims of history. One such individual is the legendary William Marshall, a little known figure in global history but someone attached to four of the most famous English monarchs. Some would call him "The Greatest Knight". But was he? That's what Danny is here to explore. Settle in for another adventure through medieval times as Danny goes through the positives and negatives of the tome and why this is easily one of his favorite books on Medieval England and one of his favorite biographies he's read in years.
Tune in every Tuesday for a new episode of The Broken Shelf.

Finally! It took years but Seven Seas Entertainment took the leap of faith and picked up Danny's favorite light novel series for localization. Long nights were spent reading this illustrious series instead of doing homework, but more importantly this series gave Danny the inspiration to start writing. Follow Danny as he covers the impact of the series on global markets, the light novel industry, and why it had such a prolific impact on him as a person. He then follows the introduction with a vivid performance of the summary and then an emotional positive and negative. Want to hear Danny with no filters (as if he ever had any to begin with), this episode is for you.

  • The Broken Shelf 102: Preparation Process
[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised.
The two original hosts go behind the scenes. Danny and Allen discuss their process for choosing reading material and how or why any book ends up in the review schedule. They both outline their note taking process and go in depth about their preparation before sitting down to record. Other points of conversation are the schedule, the co-hosts, the tools used for recording and how they *don't* have meetings before hand - which they should. Once the recording process is complete, Danny goes over the editing process and what he looks for when using Audacity. He discloses the procedure: effects used, post processing, conversion, and final creation. Overall, if you've never posted a podcast this episode may be for you, and if you have recorded before, the guys are up for any great tips.

  • The Broken Shelf 101: The Waking Fire
[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised.
Starting off the new century of their beloved podcast, Spangar and Danny visit one of their favorite authors. Although Danny was the only one to invest time into reading the first book of the trilogy, the style and themes are significant enough that Spangar adds a lot of commentary from past experience. With that, however, the fascinating world of the author articulately exposes his love of history and war - two things Danny loves, too. Come with the literary cousins as the explore a new world full of dragons and lost technology that closely resembles the machines and weapons used in World War One. Yes. Danny gets to cut loose in a fantasy series that plays with his favorite time periods elements. Get ready for a new style, high praise, and, of course, a possibly long list of hypocritical negatives.

  • The Broken Shelf 100: Furies of Calderon
[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised.
It's difficult to fathom that a few nerds with a complete disregard for literature in their youth would grow up to find the love in books and invest time into developing and programming a weekly podcast. There are many things that drive a person forward, and for the lead host, Danny, he truly needed something in his life to fill the gaps and push him to be a better person. That goal was The Broken Shelf. But how did The Broken Shelf come to be? What event ignited the fire inside of him to read again? That thing is the very book he and Spangar will be reviewing. Butcher is a masterful author, and his ingenuity and dialogue forged a path for the literary cousins to expand their horizons and purchase loads of books - something they never imaged themselves ever doing. This is the story of The Broken Shelf, a short, maybe not all that important journey, but one that Danny and Spangar want to continue fighting for by giving one of their favorite books even a smidgen of the respect it deserves.
To anyone who has every listened to The Broken Shelf - we thank you!

[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised.
It's been nearly a year since the sci-fi genre has been reviewed on The Broken Shelf, so Danny and Allen decide to rectify that mistake. As always, of course, they couldn't pick a subject without a little influence from film media because the source for today's episode will also explore the fantastic sci-fi film 'Arrival'. Seeking the original, Allen takes point in the review debating which media did better in certain areas, as well as why the story better served the plot as a novelle and not a full length novel. Using a new style - one they've
been testing out here and there - they dissect the novel into positives and negatives, and overall get to explore their two fields of study. And what of their thoughts on the theme of the novella and movie? That's all contained inside this fun, entertaining podcast!

This one confused Danny in a variety of ways. On one side he loves the deep, introspective dive into the psyche of the females, but on the other side the author went further down his delusional troped road. There's also the concerns circling the protagonist and his unwillingness to evolve as the central character, and yet, Danny argues the redundancies and cliches are the fault of the genre and maybe not purposefully the author's error. Regardless, this light novel series continues to make our host think. What makes a great light novel? How should the author have wrote the series? Is it allowed to blossom using projected scenes 'borrowed' from other, better works? Can Danny look passed his stubbornness and give an honest review? The Japanese media has his fuming and gushing all at the same time and it's a delight to listen to. Join as the crew draws ever closer to the big 100!

  • The Broken Shelf 097: A Year After the Move
[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised.
Roughly one year ago all four members of The Broken Shelf were sharing a home, crushed by boring jobs and lack luster passion. Then fate swept through and practically at the same time they all advanced to new opportunities. But still they get together and have tough debates about all things media. Well, for this general episode, Danny invites Allen along to dig through that year of separation and reflect on their personal growth and the impact of the podcast. They discuss the beginning, the tribulations, and their intentions for the future. Their talk goes through a variety of topics streaming from education, to travel, to moving, to music, to movies, and, of course, to literature. Danny gets a little sappy, and Allen professes so apprehensions, but overall, this is one of the best general episodes because it's two long time friends just having a thrilling conversation.

Finally, the translation project reach the final portions of the anime and Danny gets to do another illustrious compare and contrast of one of his favorite Japanese series. However, unlike the last iteration, Danny comes in with swift fire for his beloved anime and bashes hard with a critical hammer. Paradoxically, Danny gives tremendous praise to the light novel, but at the same time Yomi-Sensei can't escape that patented Danny hypocritical hurricane. As the last novel before it passes the anime, what are Danny's final words, and what does he hope for as the saga continues? Come find out as he tries to build that shelf.

[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised.
When you think of kings, whom do you consider first? A real historical figure? A fictional paragon of justice? A lion? What if you can't quantify whom that individual really is - as in: is he real? Danny seeks to answer that question through the use of a fantastic historical analysis of Celtic and Roman lore. His subject? The ever present King of Knights: Arthur Pendragon. Was King Arthur a real man? A king? A god? Will he return? Regardless of your personal subjective opinion, the book Danny and the Tsar discusses does a tremendous job at dealing with most of the facts. Together, the Tsar and Danny argue through deep historical philosophies as the author delves into the origin of Arthur as a man and as a Celtic God. As destiny prescribed, alongside the king are his knights: Gawain, Lancelot, and the treacherous Mordred. But the person changed most in Danny's view was the queen: Guinevere. Come to the past as these two friends debate history as a discipline and whether or not Britain's great monarch will save the world with his saber of light. Excelsior!
