[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised.
There are times when you suffer for not doing research and Danny paid for such over sight. Needing a new series to start, Danny decided it best to follow his fantasy and purchase a light novel supporting his new favorite genre: monster girls. However, sometimes a seemingly good product goes through anguish because of market pressure. Danny discusses the positives and negatives of the light novel, the art, and how over saturation in one genre can cause deterioration in what would usually be considered a strong homage to the author's influences. Danny took a chance, and had to endure the hardship of said choice.

[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised.
How can this episode possibly be so short when it's a history review? Well, for starters it was a very rudimentary, short book - only about one hundred pages. However, it was jammed packed with information and photographs that exemplified the subject of religious warfare in the late 11th century. The subject is also one of Danny's favorite. Byzantium history is criminally fringe within the discipline, and Danny explores some of the issues with access to materials and how well the author presented them. Danny also compares some of the geopolitical issues with a more infamous episode in history: The Armenian Genocide. If you don't know about pre-crusade Turkey, or even the Byzantium Empire, this is the podcast for you!

  • The Broken Shelf 082: A Many Topics General
[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised.
Remake culture in books? Will it ever happen? Have the dark taint of re-imaging already corrupted the sanctity of literature? That's only the first topic Danny and Allen cover for one of their most intriguing general episodes to date. Through the medias of music, movies, and video games, they discuss the goods and bads of remake culture and how it pertains to books and written media. Then they switch gears and talk about the opposing impacts of good and bad openings and endings. What book was so promising that the atrocious end ruined the whole experience? What introduction was so lackadaisical that the sharp turn or nuance of the theme swept them in a narrative storm of excitement. And, of course, is the ending or beginning more important? Much to discuss!

  • The Broken Shelf 081: True Tenchi Muyo Volume Three: Washu
[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised.
The fan-fare end in a somber exit. Danny reviews the final 'True Tenchi Muyo' light novel with a more hushed tone, the perky, rambunctious, loud-mouth taking a break as his expectations crush him. Although the book followed a well know Tenchi favorite heroine, the plot suffered, and the comedy felt repetitive. As sad as it sounds, Danny whimpers there is nothing new. There are certainly some great things in the novel, but so much falters from over consumption of the product and lack of narrative purpose. Fun, but overall, Danny preaches the dangerous nature of spin-offs and supplemental materials.

[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised.
Returning with another selfish fan-fare, Danny review the second 'True Tenchi Muyo' light novel. However, the longer the podcast goes the more somber Danny becomes. It's often challenging to begin a project overwhelmed with positive anticipation only for the read to severely disappoint. The read wasn't all bad, though: Danny provides a speedy synopsis, why the protagonist works as a solid relieve from other "Tenchi" leads, and how with a little sincere romance one redundant, sassy female spurs compassion. Regardless, this reviews serves more of a warning than pleasurable experience.

[Warning] This episode contains explicit language and explicit themes. Listener discretion is advised.
Allen and Danny take a break from the fantasy and history to
review the first traditional mystery novel for The Broken Shelf. Badly masked by her pseudonym, Robert Galbraith, J K Rowling ventured beyond the wall of "Hogwarts" to construct a thrill murder mystery stacked with dynamic dialogue and Holmsian misdirection. Baffled by the interwoven complexities of the characters and dialogue centric narrative, Allen discloses why Galbraith's detective makes a mark in the genre. Though, to be fair, Allen does argue against Rowling's redundant character development and flawed system of interpersonal relationships. Perhaps it's a set-up for the larger narrative whole? Also, because it's impossible not to, the duo debated a few similarities between "Potter" and "Cormoran Strike". Don't forget the puns and laughs!

It's time for the penultimate challenge! With one book remaining, Danny reviews the fifth installment of David Dalglish's 'Shadowdance' series, and then the compadres discuss the positive and negatives of the penultimate novel. Nervous about the prospect, Danny heavily praises Dalglish for his religious themes furthermore proving the green critique wrong. However, in normal fashion, Danny grinds Dalglish for his narrative choices regarding the titular character and some of the failings towards the sub-characters. And as always Allen has a laugh at Danny's expense.

Danny welcomes a magnificent guest to The Broken Shelf: his mother. As a gift for the previous Christmas, Danny bought his mother a plane ticket to South Carolina and together they got to celebrate Mother's Day for the first time in three years. The interview style podcast is separated into the three parts that outline Momma Archive's life long journey with literature. Danny engages his mother with questions about her early life, her current life, and most importantly, her struggle to get her son to read! Insightful anecdotes about life, literature, and beer. Her journey created Danny's journey and they even learn a lot about each other. It's never to late to have a heart to heart with Mom!

The young grasshoppers returns to review a piece of historical fiction. Fascinated with the Netflix series, Ol' Saint Nick came down his chimney one cold Michigan eve and gifted Spangar with the very book the series spawned from. Exploring and spoiling only the main character's narrative, Spangar and Danny discuss the tale of Utred, and how his plot to regain his lost land fit into the insane history of eighth century England. Danes, Catholics, swords, and shields, the author flaunted an extensive historical knowledge of battle and brutality. But, does the book hold up and what mistakes were made while writing? Having watched the first half of the first season (the time period the book covered), Danny also chimed in with his favorite excerpts and has Spangar judge the media transition. Don't forget a ton of laughs between the two cousins!

Returning to Charlie Holmberg's magical world of "The Paper Magician", Allen reviews the spin-off novel, "The Plastic Magician". Finding more in common with the new protagonist, Allen goes into detail about some of his life experiences and how important it is to relate to a lead character. The duo reflect on the necessity of the novel, how it functions as a spin-off, and, possibly, what it does better than the original three. They also continue the discussion on Goodread reviews and why "The Plastic Magician" seems to have better reception.
