Let's Talk Social Work

The case for care, not coercion

Listen Later

THIS EPISODE FEATURES DISCUSSION OF ISSUES WHICH MAY CAUSE DISTRESS, INCLUDING SUICIDE AND SELF-HARM, AND LISTENER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.

Andy McClenaghan is joined by Hattie and Hope from #StopSIM Coalition, Mary Buckman, Co-Chair of the BASW England Mental Health Group and Dr Alex Thomson, Vice Chair, of the Royal College of Psychiatrists Faculty of Liaison Psychiatry to discuss the Serenity Integrated Mentoring’ (SIM) model.

SIM has been described by its proponents as an innovative mental health workforce transformation model that brings together the police and community mental health services, to better support 'high intensity users' of Section 136 of the Mental Health Act and public services. However, the roll-out of the model has caused deep concerns within the social work profession and beyond. Warnings have been raised that the model is based on coercion and denial of potentially life-saving support, and is causing some service-users to live in fear of arrest or prosecution when they are in mental health crisis.
