"Sometimes we are our own worst critic" is a well-known phrase and, unfortunately, often true.  In this first episode of the new year, Jamie and Guy discuss how our inner critics or "saboteurs" often get in the way of us reaching our goals. Saboteurs are "invisible agents of self-sabotage" and represent our brain's automatic beliefs and assumptions about how to handle life's challenges.  Guy has Jamie take a "Saboteur Assessment" (or quiz) to identify her hardest-working saboteurs and then they discuss which ones they struggle with the most.  This assessment is based on the theory of Positive Intelligence by Shirzad Chamine and his bestselling book on the subject.  More information on Positive Intelligence and a link to the free Saboteur Assessment can be found here: https://www.positiveintelligence.com/

Think of this episode as Communication 101 .  Good communication is fundamental to strong relationships between spouses, parents and children, friends, etc. In this episode Jamie and Guy lay down the basics of good communication: listening, having empathy, and getting curious about the other person's thoughts or point of view.  Oftentimes we focus on what we should say when we are talking with others. But communication is more effective if we spend  more time listening and less time talking. Toxic Positivity may sound like an oxymoron - how can positivity be toxic? In this episode Jamie and Guy discuss how at times the overuse of positivity can actually be harmful or cause more pain in an already trying circumstance.  Challenges and hardships in life can not simply be "covered up" with positive phrases that dismiss the difficulty or pain that comes with them. The only way through difficulties is to go through them.  Recounting personal experiences of infertility and miscarriages to the death of loved ones, they discuss how  we often try to console others with comments like "this too shall pass" or "let's make the best of it".  Their well-meaning intention is to help the other person see the "positive" in a difficult situation but often it can backfire and make the person feel worse.

Do you ever feel like you are not enough? Not doing enough, not working hard enough, not thin enough, not being the world's most amazing parent? In this episode Jamie and Guy tackle those feelings head on.  Guy explains that to him when he settles for  "good enough" it feels like he is "giving up" or being mediocre - and he feels guilty or bad that he didn't do better. But  Jamie explains sometimes "good enough" is okay. We don't always have to strive for excellence in everything we do - instead we need to manage our expectations and accept that sometimes trying our best, even though it is not perfect, is good enough.

Have you ever had a great idea for a game and thought, "I wonder how hard it would be to make it into an actual board game?" Our guest today, Brent Peterson, can answer that. He has nine games under his belt with more ideas brewing all the time.  He has sold thousands of games in retailers across the country and on  Amazon. He describes himself as the kid who was always starting up games of "Kick the Can" or "Sardines" in the neighborhood, and that that love of games has never stopped.  This successful side business was born out of love, not necessity, and he truly loves that it brings a little fun and joy into people's lives every day.  This episode isn't all fun and games though (Brent would appreciate that pun), as a self-described extrovert, he also discusses the difficulty of feeling isolated and anxious during the early months of the pandemic and the importance of staying connected.  He discusses that as a single guy, all of his social connections were cut off and he suddenly found himself not only alone but anxious from all the events going on - Covid, earthquakes, empty store shelves, etc. - and how he got to a better place. We think his message is one everyone can relate to these days:)

Feeling anxious about the upcoming holidays? You're not alone. This episode is in response to questions we received from listeners about how to navigate holiday gatherings when members of your family have different political views, opinions about Covid, or want to bring up sensitive issues like Aunt Jean's divorce. Jamie and Guy talk about how you have to "unpack" the anxiety, set boundaries and manage what you can control.  Jamie encourages you to remember your "why" - why are you getting together for the holidays? To eat? Watch football? Talk politics? Take a nap? Establishing your "why" will help you be more intentional and authentic and make the whole experience more enjoyable.  Remember that even though people may having differing opinions, if there is respect and kindness and love - the holiday gathering can result in more connection and less contention.❤️Happy Holidays!
