  • Navigating Life Choices and Making Decisions (Magic 8 Ball not included), w/ guest Brent Peterson

On today’s episode, Jamie and Guy welcome back one of their favorite guests, Brent Peterson, founder of GameChef Board Games, former track star (almost), and one-time skydiver who is never going again - to discuss what they’ve learned about making life decisions and the power of choice. From having too many choices in the cereal aisle, to choosing what color car to buy - to choosing a life partner or a career - they discuss why making small and/or big decisions can sometimes feel paralyzing and what to do about it.  Jamie explains that, “we often don’t always feel licensed to do what we want”.  We often feel obligated to choose certain things or do certain things but they aren't always in alignment with what we really want or with what our values are. Getting clear about what you want is essential to knowing where you want to go in life and making the best decisions to get you there:)

  • Bidding for Connection: How Small Everyday Interactions Make a Big Difference in the Success of a Relationship

On this week's episode, Jamie and Guy discuss the concept of "bidding" for emotional connection as taught by Dr. John Gottman. A "bid" is any attempt from one partner to another for attention, affirmation, affection or any other positive connection. Bids show up in simple ways - a smile, a wink, and in more complex ways like a request for advice or help. They can be positive or negative. When we’re turning towards our partner - that’s a positive bid. When we're turning away from our partner - that’s a negative bid.  Every interaction is a potential bid. The importance of giving consistent positive bids to your partner cannot be understated. Dr. Gottman says it’s the biggest protection against divorce.  Listen to hear how Jamie and Guy have learned to use bids in their relationships and the benefits that come from it.

  • Validation vs. Reassurance, Knowing Your Love Language and Understanding Your Self-Worth

How do you feel loved? Do you know your "Love Language"? On this week's episode Jamie and Guy respond to a question from a listener about the difference between Validation and Reassurance.  This listener explained their love language is "words of affirmation". They wanted to know how to distinguish between Validation and Reassurance and how to ask for one while limiting the other.  To begin the episode, Jamie and Guy discuss the 5 different types of love languages and why they are important to know about yourself and your partner.  Jamie goes on to explain  that needing affirmation from your spouse is fine - as long as you understand if they don't give it to you your value has not changed.  Your sense of value and worth needs to come from within, not from your spouse (or anyone else).   When your value becomes dependent on what your spouse says or thinks about you - that can be more problematic and lead into codependency.  We encourage you to take a listen to today's episode to hear the whole discussion:)

  • The 5 Lies Technology Teaches Our Kids and How to Combat Them

A few months ago, Guy came across a show discussing kids and technology titled Connect: Real Help for Parenting Kids in a Social Media World.  One message that really resonated with him was taught by Dr. Kathy Koch PhD in Reading and Educational Psychology, Founder and President of Celebrate Kids, Inc. , and author. In this show, Dr. Kathy discussed the 5 lies that technology teaches our kids:
    1) I am the center of my own universe.
    2) I deserve to be happy all the time.
    3) I must have choices.
    4) I am my own authority.
    5) Information is all I need so I don't need teachers.
Listen as Jamie and Guy discuss each of these lies and how they affect our kids view of the world and their place in it.  They also discuss how to combat these lies and the importance of doing so as we raise our kids 💛

  • Guilt, Regret and Remorse: Learning From and Letting Go of the 'Woulda, Coulda, Shouldas' in Life

If only I had taken that class, or waited a little longer, or remembered to do that thing…we all experience guilt, regret and remorse throughout our lives. In a previous episode, Jamie and Guy discussed shame - which comes from a place of “I am bad”. In today’s episode they continued this discussion focusing more on guilt which is “I did something bad” and how to keep that guilt from becoming shame.  Guilt isn't always bad - sometimes can be a motivator and a teacher.  If we didn’t study for a test and received a bad grade - the next time we may feel more motivated to prepare better.  But only operating out of guilt - or feeling bad if we don’t do something - isn’t healthy and can lead to feelings of frustration and resentment.  Likewise, we will have regret and remorse in life - but that doesn’t make our life bad.  Jamie emphasizes the importance of understanding these feelings are normal.  What’s important is to recognize them, move through them, repair when you can and don’t let them eat you up.

  • Boundaries: Drawing the Line - Why They Are So Important to Establish and Maintain, with guest, Mara Vernon, CPCC, PCC, CDTLF

If you've listened to even a few of our podcasts over the last six months, you've probably heard  the topic of "boundaries" pop up more than a few times. On this week’s episode Jamie and Guy invite back Mara Vernon CPCC, PCC, CDTLF to dedicate a full episode on this important topic. Mara explains that boundaries, simply defined, is being clear about "what’s ok and what is not ok" for a person. Jamie added that a boundary can be thought of as “where one person ends and another begins”.  Establishing boundaries requires understanding about what you are feeling and need and being able to communicate that to others.  They discuss the reason boundaries are so difficult (and often uncomfortable) to establish and that the result of not setting boundaries can lead to feeling overwhelmed, frustrated and resentful. In comparison, when boundaries are set you receive the benefits of increased compassion, assertiveness, peace, safety, and respect.

  • Contempt and Stonewalling: (More) Negative Communication Tactics We Use When in Conflict With Our Partner (Part 2)

In this week’s episode, Jamie and Guy continue discussing  “The Four Horsemen” by Dr. John Gottman. The Four Horsemen are four negative communication styles that can arise during times of conflict with our partner. They are research proven behaviors that if left unchecked are the best predictors of a relationship failing.  They include Criticism, Defensiveness, Contempt and Stonewalling.  In today’s episode, Jamie and Guy discuss the second two, Contempt and Stonewalling. Contempt shows up when we use verbal (or nonverbal) attacks against our partner that are insulting, condescending or disrespectful in an attempt to put them down.  Stonewalling is when we withdrawal from interacting with our partner while staying physically present.  Both are non-effective ways to communicate when in conflict - but contempt is particularly destructive. Through his studies, Dr. Gottman has found that when contempt begins to overwhelm a relationship, it is the number one predictor of divorce.

Dr. Gottman teaches that conflict is inevitable and a normal, healthy part of all relationships. It's how we deal with conflict that can be problematic. Knowing how to navigate away from these negative communication styles will help ensure long-lasting, healthy relationships.  In addition to defining and sharing their experiences with these two Horsemen, Jamie and Guy also discuss the antidotes to both to help you recognize and repair them when they show up in your relationships.
