In this episode of the DetermineTruth Podcast, Rob Dalrymple and Vinnie Angelo introduce a new interview series connected to the Faithful Resistance Community Network, a community of Christian scholars, pastors, and practitioners exploring how their understanding of Scripture and the gospel has shaped—and sometimes changed—their perspectives on the world.

To begin the series, Vinnie interviews Rob about his own journey.

Raised in a Southern Baptist environment, Rob grew up influenced by dispensationalism, rapture theology, Christian Zionism, and the emerging Religious Right. Over time, studying Scripture, teaching Revelation, engaging biblical scholarship, and traveling to Israel and Palestine challenged some of his earlier assumptions.

Vinnie also shares how growing up within conservative Christian culture and consuming political talk radio shaped his early worldview—and how relationships with people outside his familiar community prompted him to reconsider some of those assumptions.

Together, they explore what it means to pursue truth with humility, integrity, and a willingness to change.

What does it actually mean to “know” God?

In this episode of the DetermineTruth Podcast, Vinnie and Rob explore 1, 2, and 3 John—three fascinating New Testament writings centered on truth, love, obedience, fellowship, and what it means to genuinely know God.

We begin with some important background questions. Did the Apostle John actually write 1, 2, and 3 John? Why is 1 John technically anonymous while 2 and 3 John identify their author simply as “the elder”? What was the Johannine community? And what can early Christian writers like Papias, Polycarp, and Ignatius tell us about the world in which these writings emerged?

Then we turn to one of the most important themes in 1 John: knowledge.

John repeatedly talks about knowing God—but the Greek text reveals something that can be easy to miss in English translations. The letter uses different Greek words for knowledge, including ginōskō and oida, as John connects what Christians know intellectually with what they have experienced and demonstrated through their lives.

That leads to a challenging question:

Can we really claim to know God if the way we live contradicts what we say we believe?

For 1 John, knowing God is not merely possessing correct theological information. Knowing Christ produces a life characterized by obedience, righteousness, love for others, and participation in the life of the Christian community.

The book of Jude is short—but it contains some of the strangest material in the New Testament.

Why does Jude talk about rebellious angels? What does Genesis 6 have to do with his argument? Why does Michael the Archangel dispute with the devil over the body of Moses? And perhaps most surprisingly, why does Jude use traditions found in writings like 1 Enoch?

In this episode of the Determine Truth Podcast, Rob and Vinnie explore Jude within the world of Second Temple Judaism and examine how ancient Jewish literature can help us understand this often-overlooked New Testament letter.

We begin with the identity of Jude himself. Was he actually the brother of Jesus? That question leads us into an unexpected discussion about Jesus’ brothers, the perpetual virginity of Mary, and why Protestants should understand Catholic and Orthodox interpretations before dismissing them.

Then we turn to Jude’s primary concern: false teachers who had entered the Christian community, distorted the grace of God, and used their theology to justify immoral behavior.

How do we recognize false teachers—and is false teaching only about getting our theology wrong?

In this episode of the Determined Truth Podcast, we explore 2 Peter and its urgent warning about false teachers within the church. While Christians often define false teaching primarily in terms of incorrect doctrine, 2 Peter pushes us further. Peter is deeply concerned with both what false teachers believe and the kind of lives their theology produces.

We begin by looking at the close relationship between 2 Peter and Jude, including why scholars frequently study these two letters together and how both draw upon Jewish traditions and writings outside the Old Testament canon.

Then we work through the major themes of 2 Peter: participating in the divine nature, growing in Christlike character, Peter's eyewitness testimony about Jesus, God's judgment, the return of Christ, and the destructive behavior of false teachers.

Along the way, we discuss:

Peter's warning is particularly important for the modern church. Correct doctrine alone is not enough if our theology produces greed, exploitation, sexual immorality, injustice, or indifference toward others.

Theology matters because what we believe ultimately shapes how we live.

And according to 2 Peter, the Christian response to false teaching isn't merely having better arguments. Followers of Jesus are called to grow in moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection, and—ultimately—love.

What does 1 Peter really teach about suffering, submission, and responding to people who treat us unfairly? In this episode of the DetermineTruth Podcast, Vinnie and Rob continue their study of 1 Peter and explore Peter’s radical vision for Christian life in a hostile culture.

First Peter was written to followers of Jesus experiencing ridicule, slander, social pressure, and persecution. Rather than calling Christians to retaliation, Peter repeatedly points them toward the example of Jesus: live faithfully, refuse to return evil for evil, and respond in a way that demonstrates the character of Christ. But does that mean Christians should simply endure every form of suffering or remain in abusive and unhealthy environments? Vinnie and Rob examine the difference between faithfully enduring opposition and wrongly using Scripture to justify abuse.

They also tackle one of the most controversial passages in the New Testament: 1 Peter 3 and Peter’s instructions to wives and husbands. What did “submission” mean in the first-century Roman world? Is Peter reinforcing patriarchy—or giving Christian women a surprising degree of freedom and agency within a culture that severely limited their choices? And what does Peter mean when he tells men to honor women as fellow heirs of the grace of life?

The conversation also explores Peter’s description of Christians as a chosen race, royal priesthood, holy nation, and people of God, the relationship between Israel and the Church, Peter’s use of Old Testament imagery, the identity of “Babylon” at the end of 1 Peter, and the historical setting of the letter.

Ultimately, 1 Peter presents a deeply challenging vision of Christian discipleship: “Do not return evil for evil or insult for insult, but give a blessing instead.” What would it look like for followers of Jesus to actually live that way when confronted by hostility, injustice, bullying, or opposition?
