In the last several years, there has been no shortage of negative commentaries on the Church. Why so much anti-vision? Are any Christians attempting to pave a positive path forward? Today, we’re talking with Brad Edwards, whose forthcoming book, “The Reason for the Church,” provides the positive vision that the Church needs. He and Patrick discuss why Christian culture has been stuck in an anti-vision mindset and why a negative perception around institutions as a whole is partly to blame. Brad details why the Church is so necessary and explains how many Christians have forgotten the Church’s role as a source of healing and community. We all like to think of ourselves as good people, right? Had we been around “back then,” we would have opposed slavery, marched for women’s suffrage, and rescued Jews from the Holocaust. But can we be so sure? The reality is that many prominent Christians, including those considered to be the Founding Fathers of Evangelicalism, have had major blindspots, particularly concerning slavery. But does the context and timeline in which you grew up provide a credible excuse for your behavior? Today’s guest, Sean McGever, is a historian and the author of “Ownership: The Evangelical Legacy of Slavery in Edwards, Wesley, and Whitefield.” Hear him unpack how the cultural thinking of the 18th century impacted Christianity and whether or not we should take that into consideration, or cancel these men altogether. Plus, is it generally true that Christians led the eventual abolitionist movement? And what are some possible modern blind spots in our culture today?

So, a Christian and a secular film festival director walk into a bar. Actually, they’re the same person. How? That’s the crazy story we’re telling on today’s episode when we continue our series breaking down each of the six types of “Joyful Outsiders” God uses to engage with culture. Jeremy Brown, a Christian and former Executive Director of a progressive, non-Christian film festival, joins us to provide an example of the advisor, those who impact culture by influencing the influential. Advisors are “in the room where it all happens” and aren’t necessarily in charge, but influence people in power. Jeremy explains his backstory and how he got involved with the internationally recognized True/False Film Fest. Did this secular organization know much about his personal faith convictions? And how did he handle the controversy that ensued after a contradictory sermon at his church led to a dramatic partnership ending that drew national attention? “A period of cultural change is commencing.” That’s what Paul Anleitner recently posted on X. But what cultural vibe shift is he referencing? Have we come to the end of postmodernism? Paul joins Patrick on the pod today to discuss our new metamodernism moment. Paul is a writer, theologian of culture, podcast host, and pastor. He begins by explaining the progression from modernism to postmodernism, and how the 1990s ushered in a level of cynicism and suspicion that’s remained until just recently. He then explains how he’s observed a newer metamodern vibe shift: the exhaustion of cynicism, the failure of postmodernism, the myth of secular progressivism, and the crisis of meaning that’s led to a sincere desire for authenticity. “Create wealthy, autonomous consumption machines.” That’s been described as the end goal of the American dream. Sounds positive at face value. But is it biblical? This week’s episode continues our series of breaking down the six ways that Christians can impact culture as presented in our book, “Joyful Outsiders.” Today, we’re focusing on builders, or people who build institutions where we live our common life (think: business, healthcare, education, church, etc.).
