Dr. Mary Shenk is Associate Professor of Anthropology, Demography, and Asian Studies at Pennsylvania State University. She is a biocultural anthropologist, human behavioral ecologist, and anthropological demographer with interests in marriage, family, kinship, parental investment, fertility, mortality, and inequality. She has conducted field research on the economics of marriage and parental investment in urban South India, the causes of rapid fertility decline in rural Bangladesh, and the effects of market integration on wealth, social networks, and health in rural Bangladesh.

In this episode, we start by talking about an evolutionary account of the sexual division of labor. We then discuss the different kinds of kinship systems, and how they relate to the distribution of resources and the rise of gender disparities. We also talk about the link between religion and fertility. We discuss fertility decline across the world, and the different factors behind it, with a focus on women’s education. Finally, we talk about the evolution of social and economic inequality in human societies, and the transition from relatively equal societies to increasingly unequal societies.

Dr. David Henshall is Professor of Physiology and Medical Physics at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. His laboratory is studying cell and molecular mechanisms of epilepsy. His research team combines cell and molecular biology techniques, data science and bioinformatics, pharmacology, neuroscience and behavior, imaging and histology, and employs a range of experimental and human models. He is the author of Fine-Tuning Life: A Guide to MicroRNAs, Your Genome's Master Regulators.

In this episode, we focus on Fine-Tuning Life. We start by covering some basics of DNA and RNA. We talk about microRNAs: how they were discovered and how we learn about them; how they evolved; how they are produced in cells; their functions and role in fine-tuning life; how they work; and their role in evolution and speciation. We then get specifically into how they work in human development, their role in brain physiology and brain cell structure, cognition and intelligence, and brain disease. Finally, we discuss a new picture of genetics coming from gene regulation and the role of microRNAs.

Dr. Thaís Pansani is an Associate Researcher at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Her main research questions are about human interaction with the Pleistocene megafauna in the Americas and the peopling of the Americas. She is interested in questions like: When did humans arrive in the Americas? Did humans interact with the Pleistocene megafauna? What were the environmental and ecological conditions in which these megamammals lived? What were the causes and consequences of the megafauna extinction in the

American continent, especially in South America? How can we identify traces of human interaction in extinct animal bones through taphonomy and zooarchaeology?

In this episode, we focus on H. sapiens’ migrations to (and within) the Americas. We discuss the timing of the migrations, whether we were the only hominin species to get there, and why we migrate. We then talk about megafauna in the Americas; interactions between humans and megafauna (with a focus on hunting); zooarchaeology, and the study of marks on animal bones; and the extinction of megafauna might have been the result of human activity. Finally, we discuss some of the most interesting unanswered questions in paleoanthropology.

Her research interests include epistemology, philosophy of language, moral and political philosophy, and feminist philosophy. She is the author of several books, the latest one being Resistance to Evidence.

In this episode, we focus on Resistance to Evidence. We start by discussing what resistance to evidence is, the phenomenon of epistemic vigilance, and positive epistemology. We then discuss what evidence itself is, the normative aspects of resistance to evidence, when it is permissible for people to suspend their judgment, and virtue responsibilist approaches to resistance to evidence. We talk about resistance to evidence as input-level epistemic malfunctioning, the phenomenon of defeat, epistemic dilemmas, and skepticism. Finally, we discuss misinformation and disinformation, and an approach to disinformation as ignorance-generating content.

What do atheists teach us about belief, morality, and what it means to be human? He is the author of Disbelief: The Origins of Atheism in a Religious Species.

In this episode, we focus on Disbelief. We talk about the idea of religion and atheism as evolutionary puzzles. We discuss popular misconceptions about religion coming from Marx, Richard Dawkins, and the New Atheists. We talk about different approaches to religion, including the cognitive science of religion, behavioral genetics, and cultural evolution. We discuss what makes religions culturally successful, and the relationship between Big Gods and prosociality. We then talk about atheism, how many atheists are there, different pathways toward atheism, whether atheism is natural, and whether atheists are moral and trustworthy. Finally, we discuss the future of religion and atheism.

Dr. David Pinsof is a research scientist who received his PhD in Psychology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2018. David’s research focuses on evolutionary psychology, political psychology, public opinion, and sexual behavior. His empirical work explores individual differences in mating psychology and their relation to political attitudes, mathematical models of alliance formation, and the origins of political belief systems.

In this episode, we talk about incentives and opinions from an evolutionary perspective. First, we discuss how behavior is determined by incentives, where incentives stem from, and how we deal with conflicting incentives. We talk about our need to look virtuous while seeming humble, the tie between incentives and morality, our need for narratives, and what makes a person likeable. We then get into opinions, and discuss what they are; minority opinions; how opinions become norms; and opinion games in science and how science really works. Finally, we talk about how when we present arguments, we are trying to convince other people that we are right, and not really searching for truth.

Dr. Rodolfo Dirzo is Associate Dean at the Doerr School of Sustainability, Bing Professor in Environmental Science, Professor of Earth System Science and Senior Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment at Stanford University. His scientific work examines the study of species interactions in tropical ecosystems from California, Latin America, and other tropical areas of the world. Recent research highlights the decline of animal life (“defaunation”), and how this affects ecosystem processes/services (e.g. disease regulation).

In this episode, we first talk about species interactions, and the role they play in evolution. We also talk about hybrid networks, and how they can be disrupted by human activity. We discuss why biodiversity conservation is so important, and how climate change impacts animal populations. We then talk about mass extinctions, and we focus on the ongoing sixth mass extinction. Finally, we discuss the signs that the sixth mass extinction is the result of human activity, and how it can impact humans.

Andrea Zagaria is a PhD student at the University of Trento, Italy. His research interests include psychopathology and theoretical psychology. His research is informed by cultural evolutionary theory.

In this episode, we discuss whether evolutionary psychology is a scientific revolution, as claimed by David Buss. We start by talking about the trends and prominence of four major schools of thought in scientific Psychology (neuroscience, cognitivism, behaviorism, and psychoanalysis), and we discuss why scientific psychology is a nonparadigmatic discipline, and the issue of insularity of psychological subdisciplines. We then discuss what a scientific revolution is, and whether evolutionary psychology is one. We also talk about cultural evolutionary theory, and the study of meaning and sense-making. Finally, we discuss the primary topics of study in evolutionary psychology, and whether psychology can become a paradigmatic discipline in the future.
