Dr. Peter Lindert is Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Economics at the University of California, Davis. Dr. Lindert studies the causes and effects of modern fiscal redistribution; and the history of inequality, political voice and economic growth. He is the author of several books, including Making Social Spending Work.

In this episode, we focus on Making Social Spending Work. We first ask what social spending is, and address the main arguments for and against government social spending. We talk about the conditions that allow for government social spending to take off, why Northwest Europe led the way, the importance of universal education, and a shift in spending toward the powerful and the elderly since 1910. We discuss the “free lunch puzzle”, the benefits of universal healthcare and welfare programs, social spending in developing countries, social spending in autocracies and democracies, and trends since 1980. We talk about the impact of immigration on the economy, and the pension system and the sustainability of social security. Finally, go through examples of wrong social spending, and the biggest threats to social programs until 2050.

Dr. Joel Marks is professor emeritus of philosophy at the University of New Haven and a Bioethics Center Scholar at Yale University. His main areas of scholarly interest have been theoretical and applied ethics, both having come together in recent years in thinking about animal ethics. Meanwhile a new area of interest is planetary defense (against comets and asteroids). He is the author of several books, including the latest one, The Spread: and other essays on moralism and guilt.

In this episode, we focus on The Spread. We start by discussing where morals stem from; the roles of blaming, guilt, and shame; and what “objective moral values” really mean. We talk about a scientific account of morality. We discuss whether it makes sense for atheists to believe in objective moral values. We talk about desirism, rationality, and analetheism (is truth real?). Finally, we discuss whether it would be feasible to abolish morality, and if amoralists would just be immoral people.

Dr. Sergio Almécija is Senior Research Scientist in Biological Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History. He studies the key adaptations defining different stages of ape and human evolution (i.e., hominoid evolution). He pays special attention to the process leading and following the split between humans and apes (i.e., “non-human hominoids”). He is the editor of Humans: Perspectives on Our Evolution from World Experts.

In this episode, we focus on Humans. We start by talking about the story behind the book, and how Dr. Almécija came up with the questions asked to the experts. We discuss what the antecedents of human evolution are, and the relationship between primatology and anthropology. We talk about what it means to be human according to anthropology, and the insights we can get from other disciplines, like medicine, psychology, and philosophy. We discuss what were the questions the experts disagreed the most on, and the biggest known unknowns in human evolution. Finally, we discuss whether a scientific perspective on humans is compatible with religious or spiritual views.

Dr. João Teixeira is Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow at the Evolution of Cultural Diversity Initiative, School of Culture, History and Language at the Australian National University & Scientific Vice-Coordinator at the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Coimbra. He is a population geneticist focusing on the evolution of humans and closely related species. His main research focus revolves around human evolution during the Pleistocene, in particular the admixture events between so-called modern and archaic humans after the out-of-Africa and before human colonization of Sahul.

In this episode, we start by discussing what are modern and archaic humans. We talk about out-of-Africa migrations by H. sapiens and other hominins. We discuss how hominin species are classified. We talk about the Neanderthals and the Denisovans, and how they interbred with H. sapiens. We discuss whether the Neanderthals really went extinct. We talk about what we can learn from genetics about human evolution, and specifically admixture and human dispersals. Finally, we discuss balancing selection and trans-species polymorphisms, and the implications they have for how we understand human evolution.
