Dr. Alecia Carter is Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at University College London. Her current research investigates (1) how primates respond to the deaths of others and what this can tell us about the evolution of cognition and emotion and (2) how individuals access information to make decisions. In particular, she studies how individuals use their social environment to access information, and how their phenotype, their individual characteristics, may limit their use of that information. Her previous research addressed how and why animals' behavior varies from others but is consistent through time.
In this episode, we talk about thanatology, animal personality, and culture. We talk about what thanatology is, and go through some of the ways baboons react to infants’ corpses, with a focus on carrying behaviors. We discuss issues related to anthropomorphism and biological continuity. We then talk about conceptual and methodological challenges in the study of animal personality; studying personality in the wild versus the lab; and comparing personality across species. We discuss how social learning is studied in behavioral ecology, and we talk about culture, social transmission of information, and innovation. Finally, we discuss Dr. Carter’s work on women’s visibility in academic seminars.

Dr. James McCann is Professor Emeritus of History at Boston University. Dr. McCann’s research and teaching interests include agricultural and ecological history of Africa, Ethiopia, and the Horn of Africa, field research methods in African studies, and the history of food/cuisine in Africa and the Atlantic world. He is the author of books like Stirring the Pot: A History of African Cuisine; Maize and Grace: A History of Africa’s Encounter with a New World Crop; People of the Plow: An Agricultural History of Ethiopia; and From Poverty to Famine in Northeast Ethiopia: Rural History, 1900-1995.
In this episode, we focus on Maize and Grace. We talk about maize and its main traits as a crop. We discuss how it spread across the globe, and particularly, how it got to Africa. We talk about the role of politics and economics in the spread of maize across Africa, and we get into the illustrative example of southern Africa, and how politics, science, and race intermingled there. We discuss the impact of maize on Africa’s biodiversity and the health and nutrition of African people. We talk about how colonialism influenced the spread of crops across the globe. We discuss the causal relationship between climate and history. Finally, we discuss the work of Jared Diamond, and the idea of geographical determinism.

Dr. Claudio Tennie is a Tenured Research Group Leader (“Tools and Culture among Early Hominins”) in the Department of Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology at the University of Tübingen. In addition, he is an adjunct scientist at the Lester E. Fisher Center for the Study and Conservation of Apes. His main research triangulates what (if anything) makes human cognition unique - as well as why (and relatedly, when this happened and how often). In particular, he uses various methods and pathways to study the factors and the prehistorical beginnings that enabled the typical modern human "variant of culture": cumulative culture of know-how.
In this episode, we talk about ape culture. We start by defining it, and discuss if it is similar or different to human culture. We talk about studies done in captivity versus the ones done in the wild. We discuss the differences between ape culture and human culture, and focus on supra-individual know-how. We discuss what we can learn from these questions. We talk about the “similarity hypothesis", and why is it important to study unenculturated and untrained apes. We discuss the work of Cecilia Heyes and its potential implications for the study of culture. We talk about tasks commonly used to study ape social learning, and what we can learn from them. Finally, we discuss if we know where the differences in the cultures between humans and apes come from.

Dr. Lydia Moland is a Professor of Philosophy at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, where she teaches courses on moral philosophy, aesthetics, and the history of modern philosophy. For most of her career, she has written on nineteenth-century German philosophy. Recently, she turned her attention to her own country and to women. She discovered the work of American abolitionist Lydia Maria Child, on whom she wrote a book titled Lydia Maria Child: A Radical American Life (2022).
In this episode, we talk about 19th-century German philosophy, and abolitionism in the US. We discuss what characterizes German philosophy, particularly the topic of subjectivism. We get into Hegel’s philosophy, and his work on aesthetics and the arts, tragedy and comedy, and modern subjectivity in art. We talk about Hegel and Marx, and their views on capitalism, society, and poverty. We discuss how 19th-century philosophers took laughter seriously. Finally, we talk about abolitionism in the US, the work of Lydia Maria Child, and we discuss what we should make of politically motivated philosophy.

Dr. Branko Milanović is Presidential Professor at the Graduate Center and a senior fellow at the Stone Center on Socio-Economic Inequality at The City University of New York (CUNY). Dr. Milanović’s main area of work is income inequality, in individual countries and globally, as well as historically, among pre-industrial societies (Roman Empire, Byzantium, and France before the Revolution), and even inequality in soccer. His latest book is Visions of Inequality: From the French Revolution to the End of the Cold War.
In this episode, we focus on Visions of Inequality. We start by talking about how long people have been thinking about economic inequality, and the elements of the best income distribution studies. We then go through the work of authors like François Quesnay, Adam Smith, David Ricardo, Karl Marx, Vilfredo Pareto, and Simon Kuznets, and how there was a natural progression across them. We discuss how and why studies of income distribution went into retreat during the Cold War era; the rise of neoliberalism and its consequences; and what led to the revival of economic studies. We also talk about a recent expansion in our understanding of the dynamics of inequality, with race and gender inequality. Finally, we discuss Dr. Milanović’s goals with this book.

Dr. Émile Torres is a researcher at Leibniz Universität Hannover, in Germany. Their work over the past decade has centered around a single theme: eschatology, whether religious, secular, or scientific. Recently, their work has been focused on the nature and causes of human extinction, its ethical implications, and the history of the idea. They are the author of Morality, Foresight, and Human Flourishing: An Introduction to Existential Risks, and their latest book is Human Extinction: A History of the Science and Ethics of Annihilation.
In this episode, we focus on Human Extinction. We start by discussing how old the idea of human extinction is in Western history. We then talk about five existential moods across history, and get into anthropogenic extinction, natural causes of extinction, and the existential mood of our current moment. We discuss what people might mean by “human” and “extinction”. Finally, we talk about ideas in favor of human extinction.

Dr. Kevin Mitchell is Associate Professor of Genetics and Neuroscience at Trinity College Dublin. He is interested in the development of connectivity in the brain, specifically in how this process is controlled by genes and how mutations in such genes affect the connectivity of neuronal circuits, influence behavior and perception and contribute to disease. His latest book is Free Agents: How Evolution Gave Us Free Will.
In this episode, we focus on Free Agents. We start by discussing how scientists approach free will, and if we should define free will. We go through some of the major steps in the evolution of free will, and talk about the origins of life on Earth; informational causation; the purpose of life; meaning and value; the evolution of decision making; agency; the evolution of nervous systems; the neocortex; and self-awareness. We talk about how we simulate different courses of action, and how we should understand decision making as a process. We discuss indeterminacy in Physics and Neuroscience. We talk about the Libet experiments, and studies of brain legions. We discuss personality traits and other psychological predispositions. We talk about constraints and top-down causation. Finally, we discuss the link between free will and moral responsibility.
